Tony Bobulinski, an energy executive and Navy veteran, recently testified before the House Oversight Committee as part of the ongoing impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. Bobulinski gained public attention after claiming that Biden was involved in foreign business deals, particularly with regard to his son Hunter Biden’s ventures in China.
In 2017, Bobulinski briefly worked with Hunter Biden on a company called Sinohawk. He alleges that during this time, he met with Joe Biden, then the vice president, to discuss Hunter’s business plans in China. Bobulinski claims that Joe Biden was “plainly familiar” with these plans. Shortly after this meeting, Bobulinski received an email regarding equity allocation in Sinohawk, which referenced “10% held by H for the big guy,” a reference he believes to be Joe Biden.
These claims by Bobulinski have not been corroborated, and several other business partners, including James Gilliar, Devon Archer, Mervyn Yan, and Georges Bergès, have testified that President Biden had no involvement in Hunter’s deals and did not discuss his son’s businesses with them.
Bobulinski has stated that he has “never been political” and has occasionally donated to Democrats, including a donation to California Rep. Ro Khanna. However, he has been amplified by Republicans, with former President Donald Trump inviting him to a debate with Biden.
In response to Bobulinski’s claims, Hunter Biden’s attorneys have requested an investigation into Bobulinski for making false statements to the FBI regarding Hunter’s business deals and President Biden’s knowledge of them.
Hunter Biden’s business dealings first came under scrutiny in 2020 when emails allegedly belonging to him were published by the New York Post. These emails, found on a laptop left at a computer repair shop, purportedly show Hunter’s involvement in international business ventures, including his position on the board of Ukrainian energy company Burisma.
Critics have suggested that Hunter profited from his father’s position, with some, like Bobulinski, claiming that President Biden took a direct cut of the money. President Biden has denied any wrongdoing, and the White House has called the impeachment inquiry “baseless,” accusing Republicans of pushing “debunked conspiracy theories.”
Bobulinski has alleged that Hunter and James Biden were “paranoid about keeping Joe Biden’s involvement secret,” insisting that he was instructed not to mention Joe Biden’s involvement in writing, only in person. However, Rob Walker, one of Hunter’s business partners closely involved in the deal with Bobulinski, has testified that he never discussed business with President Biden, even during Biden’s time as a senator and vice president.
Democrats on the House Oversight Committee have released Walker’s testimony to the FBI, where he accused Bobulinski of manipulating emails and recorded conversations to fit his narrative.
Bobulinski’s testimony before the House Oversight Committee was held behind closed doors, with Republicans likely to release portions of it to support their impeachment claims against President Biden. The inquiry continues, with both sides presenting conflicting narratives about the extent of Biden’s involvement in his son’s business dealings.
