Mexican security forces clashed with alleged cartel members in Miguel Alemán, a border town near Texas, resulting in the deaths of 12 gunmen. The incident occurred just a stone’s throw away from Roma, Texas, highlighting the ongoing cartel violence in the area.
According to authorities in Tamaulipas, the state where Miguel Alemán is located, the shootout began after armed civilians attacked Mexican troops around 2 p.m. local time. The confrontation escalated into a fierce gun battle, leading to the deaths of all 12 gunmen. The attackers were believed to be associated with a drug cartel, and the clash involved the use of military drones and a helicopter.
Following the exchange of fire, authorities seized a significant cache of weapons, including a dozen rifles, cartridges, and magazines of various calibers. Despite the intensity of the firefight, there were no reports of injuries or casualties among the Mexican troops.
The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Mexican authorities in combating organized crime and maintaining security in the region. Tamaulipas has long been a hotspot for cartel activity, with the Gulf Cartel exerting significant control over the border cities of Matamoros and Reynosa.
The violence in Tamaulipas has had far-reaching consequences, with several incidents highlighting the dangers faced by residents and visitors alike. In September, a shooting between rival drug cartels in Miguel Alemán resulted in several Americans being caught in the crossfire, leaving seven individuals injured.
In March 2023, four Americans were kidnapped in Matamoros while on a trip to Mexico for cosmetic surgery. Tragically, two of the kidnapped Americans died, while the other two survivors were eventually rescued and returned to the United States. The Scorpions faction of the Gulf Cartel later issued an apology for the kidnapping and handed over five members involved in the incident to authorities.
In July, the discovery of 27 bodies in unmarked graves in Reynosa further highlighted the grim reality of cartel violence in the region. Despite efforts to enhance border security measures between Texas and Tamaulipas, such as a memorandum of understanding signed in 2022, the recent shootout in Miguel Alemán serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat posed by drug cartels along the Texas-Mexico border.
