Neuralink Patient Controls Mouse with Thought

Neuralink

Elon Musk announced that the first human implanted with a Neuralink brain chip has successfully recovered and can now control a computer mouse using only their thoughts. This achievement offers a glimpse into Neuralink’s progress as it aims to restore lost abilities like movement and sight while enhancing memory and intelligence.

During an X Spaces event with journalist Katherine Brodsky, Musk revealed that the patient, who underwent the procedure in January, is showing no ill effects and can move the mouse around a screen just by thinking. This milestone surgery, assisted by Neuralink’s surgical robot, signifies a significant step forward for the company in its quest to directly connect brains to computers.

Musk emphasized that Neuralink’s goal is to enable users to perform multiple actions through thought alone, such as holding a button while moving a mouse. The company is striving to expand beyond just two buttons, a development that Musk described as progressing very well overall.

Despite these advancements, Neuralink is still in the early stages of testing and development. Musk noted that the technology’s widespread deployment, which would enable users to control devices like phones and computers just by thinking, is still many years away. Initially, Neuralink’s products will focus on restoring lost functions for people with paralysis or vision impairments, with future applications aimed at enhancing memory and intelligence.

Regarding Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s recent skepticism of brain implants and neural interface technology, Musk remains committed to Neuralink’s vision. While Zuckerberg has expressed caution about early versions of such technology, Musk believes in the potential of neural interfaces to revolutionize human-computer interaction.

In the realm of social media, Musk’s controversial acquisition of Twitter, now rebranded as X, has brought significant changes to the platform. Despite criticism and skepticism, Musk envisions transforming X into an “everything app” akin to China’s WeChat, with plans for new features such as group video chats, expanded financial services, and enhanced content recommendations.

In conclusion, Neuralink’s progress in enabling computer control through thought represents a significant advancement in neurotechnology. While challenges and ethical considerations remain, the potential for enhancing human capabilities and restoring lost functions is becoming increasingly tangible.
