Netflix’s ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Falls Short, Divides Fans

Avatar: The Last Airbender

Netflix’s live-action remake of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” has sparked a mix of reactions from fans and critics, though its viewership numbers have soared, debuting at the top spot on Netflix in numerous countries. Despite this success, it falls short of the critical acclaim achieved by Netflix’s earlier adaptation of “One Piece,” which garnered praise from both critics and the notoriously discerning anime and manga community.

“One Piece” received an impressive 85% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, coupled with a remarkable 95% audience score, a remarkable achievement for such a potentially controversial adaptation. In contrast, “Avatar: The Last Airbender” has divided critics and audiences. While it holds a 60% approval rating from critics, occasionally dipping to a “rotten” score of 59%, it has managed to secure a 75% audience score. Given the fiercely protective nature of “Avatar” fans towards the source material, this audience score is considered quite favorable, even if it falls short of the heights reached by “One Piece.”

Compared to other live-action anime adaptations by Netflix, “Avatar” fares relatively well. “Cowboy Bebop” received a 45% critic rating and a 60% audience score, while the live-action “Death Note” movie garnered a dismal 36% from critics and a mere 23% from fans.

One notable difference between “One Piece” and “Avatar” lies in the involvement of the original creators. Eiichiro Oda, the creator of “One Piece,” actively participated in the project and collaborated closely with the showrunners. In contrast, the original creators of “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, departed the live-action project in 2020 due to creative differences. Fans have often cited their absence when critiquing changes made in the show or elements left out. Nevertheless, approximately 75% of fans seem satisfied with the final product.

“Avatar: The Last Airbender” has also received a decent rating on IMDb, with an overall score of 7.5/10 and every episode scoring above 7.0. Its best episode, “Masks,” boasts an 8.4 rating, while the second episode featuring the Kyoshi Warriors has an 8.0 rating. While these ratings are solid, “One Piece” surpasses them with an overall score of 8.5 and nearly every episode scoring above 8.0.

Considering the series’ strong viewership and relatively positive reception, there is speculation about the possibility of renewal for a second or even a third season. With Netflix only needing to complete three seasons in total, the show’s decent reception and strong viewership make it a likely candidate for renewal. Netflix has a significant investment in the series, and it appears to be far from a commercial failure. Therefore, fans can remain hopeful for the future of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” on Netflix.
