Kansas City Police Release Adult Detainee in Parade Shooting

Shooting Leaves One Dead, 22 Injured

Kansas City police have released the only adult detained in connection with Wednesday’s tragic mass shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade. The individual was determined not to be involved in the incident, which left at least one dead and 22 injured, ranging in age from eight to 47.

Hospital officials confirmed that most patients from the shooting have been discharged from two of the three area hospitals, including University Health Truman Medical Center and Children’s Mercy Kansas City. The deceased victim has been identified as Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a popular Kansas City DJ and radio host with radio station KKFI 90.1. Authorities have stated that the shooting, which occurred around 2 p.m. local time, appears to be the result of a dispute between several individuals that escalated into gunfire.

Law enforcement officials emphasized on Thursday morning that there is no indication of terrorism or violent extremism related to the incident. CNN was the first to report the release of the adult detainee. Looking ahead, the focus will be on the charges brought against the other individuals in custody. Police have 24 hours from the time of their arrest to either charge or release them. A particularly distressing aspect of the shooting is that at least 11 of the victims are under 16 years old, as stated by authorities on Thursday.

The tragic event unfolded following the Kansas City Chiefs’ celebratory parade for their Super Bowl victory over the San Francisco 49ers. The parade ended with a rally in front of Union Station, after which reports of gunfire near the station prompted a swift police response. According to Police Chief Graves, officers on the scene managed to track down one suspect on foot, leading to the eventual apprehension of both suspects. Multiple firearms were recovered during the arrest.

This incident marks the 48th mass shooting of 2024, according to the Gun Violence Archive. The community is reeling from the violence, and the investigation into the motive and circumstances of the shooting continues.
