When Lamborghini launched the Urus SUV, critics doubted its performance credentials, viewing it as a trendy departure from the brand’s legacy. However, the sporty and compact V8-powered SUV quickly silenced skeptics, becoming a significant driver of Lamborghini’s sales. In 2023, just six years after its introduction, the Urus accounted for a remarkable 60% of Lamborghini’s sales, with over 6,000 units sold.
Last week, Lamborghini unveiled a redesigned version of the Urus, aiming to build on its success. The new model, dubbed the “SE,” signifies a significant upgrade. The “S” designation denotes the S trim of the SUV, while the “E” indicates the addition of a plug-in electric powertrain. This innovative technology enhances the SUV’s performance by combining the power of the gas engine with electric capabilities.
The Urus SE features a 25.9 kWh electric system paired with the V8 engine from the S model, boosting the SUV’s horsepower from 657 to an impressive 789. Priced at $258,000, the Urus SE commands a $23,000 premium over the S model but is still more affordable than the Performante, priced at approximately $260,000, which offers similar horsepower but includes enhanced suspension and other race-oriented features.
One of the Urus SE’s standout features is its “Max Performance” mode, which unleashes all 789 horsepower to the wheels for a 20-second burst of exhilarating power. This mode, along with 10 other drive modes, allows drivers to tailor the SUV’s performance to their preferences and driving conditions.
I had the opportunity to preview the Urus SE at Club Lamborghini in New York City. While the vehicle was powered and stationary, it provided a glimpse into the luxury and performance that the Urus SE offers.
The hybrid powertrain of the Urus SE offers drivers the flexibility to use electric power when desired, reducing the conspicuousness of the vehicle during quiet or late-night drives. However, for those seeking maximum performance, the 11 drive modes of the Urus SE provide ample opportunity to unleash its full potential.
The redesign of the Urus SE extends beyond its powertrain, with subtle updates to its exterior and interior. The exterior features a new hood design, inspired by the Lamborghini Revuelto, the brand’s first plug-in electric hybrid. Additionally, the rear of the SUV boasts a new diffuser that incorporates Lamborghini’s signature hexagonal design language.
Inside, the Urus SE maintains its “jet cockpit” design, with new control panels and a larger multimedia screen. The interior is upholstered in black leather with orange accents, carbon fiber, and microsuede, providing both luxury and practicality. The front seats feature adjustable side bolsters, heating, cooling, and massage functions, ensuring a comfortable ride even during spirited driving.
The Urus SE will be available for purchase by the end of the year, with pre-orders already underway. It comes in two new paint colors: Arancio Egon, a bright orange metallic, and Bianco Sapphirus, a sparkly metallic white. Despite its luxurious design, the Urus SE subtly hints at its power, with minimal external branding distinguishing it as the most powerful Urus model to date.
