Iran’s President and Foreign Minister Die in Helicopter Crash

IRNA: Helicopter Crash Site Located

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian were tragically killed in a helicopter crash in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province. The crash, which occurred on Sunday night, claimed the lives of all on board, including the governor of East Azarbaijan Province, Malek Rahmati, and several bodyguards.

The helicopter was en route to Tabriz from a dam inauguration near the Azerbaijan border when it encountered difficulties due to the region’s mountainous terrain, icy conditions, and thick fog. Despite efforts by local authorities, the crash site was challenging to access, delaying search and rescue operations.

In response to the tragic news, the Iranian cabinet convened an emergency meeting, during which they hailed Raisi as a national hero and a loyal servant to the nation and the Supreme Leader. The cabinet pledged to continue Raisi’s legacy, expressing confidence in the country’s ability to manage its affairs with the support of its people and divine guidance.

Per the Iranian constitution, First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber assumed the role of acting president following the crash. A new presidential election is mandated to take place within 50 days, as confirmed by state media, which reported that Mokhber chaired the emergency cabinet meeting on Monday.

The crash has sent shockwaves across Iran, with many mourning the loss of Raisi and his colleagues. Raisi, a hardliner, was seen as a potential successor to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who had endorsed Raisi’s candidacy in the 2021 presidential election.

Former Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif blamed the United States for the tragedy, citing sanctions that have reportedly hindered Iran’s ability to maintain its aviation fleet. Zarif’s comments underscore the ongoing tensions between Iran and the U.S., which have escalated in recent years.

The loss of President Raisi and his delegation has not only left a void in Iran’s political leadership but has also raised questions about the country’s future direction. As Iran prepares for a new presidential election, the nation faces a period of uncertainty and transition as it mourns the loss of one of its key political figures.
