Apple’s WWDC to Spotlight AI Plans, Boost iPhone Sales

Apple CEO Tim Cook

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) starting today is poised to unveil Apple’s long-awaited artificial intelligence (AI) strategy, a move eagerly anticipated by investors and users alike amid concerns over declining iPhone sales. CEO Tim Cook will deliver the keynote address at 1 p.m. ET, where Apple is expected to reveal its AI roadmap, including integrating the ChatGPT chatbot into future iPhones and enhancing existing AI features like Siri and message reply suggestions.

While Apple has been relatively quiet about its AI efforts compared to competitors like Microsoft and Google, this year’s WWDC could signal its catch-up with the industry. Analysts see this event as a crucial moment for Apple to revitalize iPhone sales, with projections estimating a potential 1.5 billion unit sales boost. However, analysts caution that only the latest iPhone models, likely the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16, will have the performance capabilities to run all the new AI software effectively.

One of the key points to watch at WWDC will be whether Apple announces a partnership with Microsoft-backed OpenAI, particularly regarding revenue-sharing models. Additionally, analysts are eager to see if Apple will launch generative AI across iPhone applications like Siri and iMessage by September, which could kickstart a significant upgrade cycle among iPhone users.

Despite historically not being a major stock catalyst for Apple, analysts believe this year’s WWDC could be different as Apple enters the “Gen AI race.” The stock has underperformed compared to the S&P 500 and Microsoft, with investor concerns ranging from Apple’s unclear AI monetization strategy to declining sales in key markets like China.

Overall, this year’s WWDC promises to be a pivotal event for Apple, potentially reshaping its AI narrative and reigniting interest in its flagship iPhone products.
