XPENG G6 Challenges Tesla Model Y

XPENG G6

Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) are rapidly gaining global prominence, yet tariffs and taxes could hinder their growth. XPENG, a brand known for its technological prowess, has unveiled its latest model, the G6, positioning it as a direct challenger to the Tesla Model Y. I had the opportunity to test drive the G6 at its Amsterdam launch, and here’s what I found.

The G6 represents XPENG’s foray into the mainstream market, following the success of its previous models, the P7 sedan and the G9 SUV. Unlike its predecessors, the G6 is a medium-sized SUV, competing directly with the Tesla Model Y. JATO recently confirmed the Model Y as the best-selling car globally in 2023, setting a high bar for the G6 to match. However, with the potential for high volume sales, especially in markets like the UK where it will be available in right-hand drive by the end of 2024, the G6 aims to make a significant impact.

Design-wise, the G6 bears some resemblance to the Model Y, particularly in its sloping rear profile, reminiscent of the Ford Mustang Mach-E. However, it features XPENG’s signature “robot face” front design, giving it a distinct identity. Despite its tall SUV stature, the G6 boasts an impressive drag coefficient of 0.248Cd, enhancing its aerodynamic efficiency. While the overall design is understated, some elements, like the body-colored wheel arches outlined by black bands, could have been executed differently for a more premium look.

The G6 offers three powertrain options, catering to different preferences. The entry-level RWD Standard version comes with a 66kWh battery and a 258hp rear-wheel-drive motor. The RWD Long Range variant features an 87.5kWh battery and a slightly more powerful 286hp motor, offering greater range. For those seeking more performance, the dual-motor AWD Performance version boasts a 476hp output, delivering a thrilling driving experience.

XPENG has streamlined the options for the G6, offering simplicity in choices. All models come standard with 20-inch wheels, offering five color choices and two interior trims. The major optional extra is an electric towbar, with no additional technology or feature packs. While this simplifies the ordering process, more color variety, especially for the Performance model, would have been appreciated.

Inside, the G6 offers a well-crafted interior with comfortable leatherette seats and a sense of durability. Smartphone enthusiasts will appreciate the dual chargers providing 50W each, along with cooling ventilation to prevent overheating. However, the lack of a glovebox and the need to operate all climate controls through the central infotainment screen may be off-putting to some.

In terms of space, the G6 excels in providing ample room for rear passengers, complemented by a panoramic sunroof that enhances the sense of space. However, its luggage space falls short compared to the Model Y, with 571 liters of cargo capacity that expands to 1,374 liters with the rear seats down. Despite this, the G6 offers a towing capacity of 1,500kg with the optional towbar, adding to its practicality.

Performance-wise, the G6 offers competitive acceleration and range. The RWD Standard model achieves 0-62mph in 6.9 seconds, matching the Model Y RWD. The RWD Long Range variant improves on this slightly with a 0-62mph time of 6.7 seconds. However, the AWD Performance model stands out, reaching 62mph in just 4.1 seconds, rivaling the Model Y Performance.

On the technology front, the G6 is packed with sensors and computing power, aligning with XPENG’s goal of achieving Level 4 autonomous driving by 2025. However, due to regulatory constraints, the G6’s autonomous driving capabilities are limited in some regions, offering advanced driver assistance systems instead.

In terms of pricing, the G6 presents a compelling value proposition, undercutting the Tesla Model Y across its range. In the Netherlands, the G6 starts at €43,000 for the RWD Standard version, making it an attractive option for buyers seeking a premium EV experience without the premium price tag.

However, challenges remain, particularly regarding import duties and taxes, which could impact the G6’s pricing and competitiveness in certain markets. Despite these challenges, the XPENG G6 offers a quality package with competitive range, performance, and technology, positioning it as a strong contender in the EV market.
