Senate Investigates Secret Service’s Trump Shooting Response

Butler, Pennsylvania - July 13: Secret Service agents shield

The Secret Service is under intense scrutiny following a distressing incident that occurred on Saturday, when a gunman fired several shots at former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally. The attack, which led to serious injuries for Trump and the death of a bystander, has drawn sharp criticism from Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who described the agency’s security measures as a “failure.” Mayorkas’ comments underscore the gravity of the situation, as a bullet grazed Trump’s right ear, and the tragedy claimed the life of Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old man from Pennsylvania, who was fatally shot while trying to shield his wife and daughter from the gunfire. The Senate Committee on Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs has responded to the incident by announcing a new “bipartisan investigation” aimed at uncovering the circumstances surrounding the assassination attempt. Committee Chair Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) has expressed urgency in resolving the matter and has set a goal to complete the investigation by August.

In addition to the Senate investigation, the House Oversight Committee is scheduled to receive a briefing from the Secret Service on Tuesday regarding their response to the shooting. Director Kimberly Cheatle, who has faced significant pressure since the incident, will testify before the committee on July 22. Mayorkas has assured CNN that the government is committed to providing “answers to the American people to the fullest extent possible” after an independent review of the Secret Service’s actions. This review will delve into how the shooting unfolded and seek to identify improvements to prevent such incidents in the future.

Compounding the controversy, reports have emerged that the Secret Service failed to conduct a thorough sweep of the building from which the suspected shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, fired. The building, located less than 200 yards from the rally site, had been identified as a potential security threat by the Secret Service. Instead of addressing this vulnerability, the agency relied on local law enforcement for security at the location. The Pennsylvania State Police have since clarified that they were not responsible for securing that particular area. Cheatle, for her part, has publicly addressed the shooting for the first time, commending certain aspects of the Secret Service’s response, including the actions of the counter-sniper team that neutralized Crooks. She has pledged full cooperation with the independent investigation mandated by President Joe Biden and reassured that security measures for the upcoming Republican National Convention have been enhanced. The Secret Service has also made adjustments to Trump’s security detail following the incident.

The shooting occurred shortly after 6 p.m. on Saturday when Crooks, 20, fired several rounds from the rooftop of a building adjacent to the campaign rally. Trump, who was speaking at the event, ducked behind a podium and was quickly surrounded by Secret Service agents who escorted him off stage. Despite the chaos, Trump was seen pumping his fist into the air, with visible blood on the right side of his face. Crooks was subsequently shot and killed by Secret Service snipers. An ongoing FBI-led investigation is probing the details of the attack, including the discovery of explosive materials in Crooks’ car and home. Authorities are still uncertain about Crooks’ motives, with the shooter identified as a registered Republican who was too young to vote in a presidential election.

In the aftermath of the shooting, numerous videos and accounts from rally attendees have surfaced, highlighting the public’s attempts to alert authorities about Crooks. One widely circulated video shows attendees pointing out Crooks to police officers, while Ben Maser reported observing Crooks moving between rooftops and alerted police before the shooting began. Another witness, Greg Smith, recounted his efforts to notify authorities for several minutes prior to the gunfire.

Reflecting on the events, Smith expressed frustration, stating, “I’m thinking to myself, ‘Why is Trump still speaking? Why haven’t they pulled him off the stage?’” He continued, “The next thing you know, five shots ring out.”
