Xiaomi G34WQi Review: 180Hz Curved Monitor for $290

Xiaomi G34WQi

Xiaomi, known for its premium flagship phones, is expanding its product range in the U.S. with an eye-catching addition to the gaming monitor market. After a successful launch in China earlier this year, the Xiaomi Curved Gaming Monitor G34WQi is now available for purchase in America, promising a blend of high performance and affordability.

The G34WQi features a 34-inch curved screen with a 1440p resolution, offering a refresh rate of 180Hz. Priced at $290 on Amazon, this monitor presents a remarkable value, although it is slightly higher than the approximately $210 retail price in China. Despite this minor increase, the monitor remains an attractive option for budget-conscious gamers and professionals.

Setup of the G34WQi is straightforward. The monitor comes with a base that attaches to the monitor arm using just four screws, and the arm itself clicks into place with a satisfying snap. The arm allows for adjustable height and vertical tilt, enhancing ergonomic flexibility. While the monitor’s construction is primarily plastic, the base and arm are made of metal, providing a sturdy build.

One design feature that stands out is the circular LED light ring on the back of the monitor. While this aesthetic element is typical for gaming products, it may be more distracting than useful for some users. The front of the monitor boasts an anti-reflective matte coating on its 34-inch, 3440 x 1440 VA display panel, which helps reduce glare and maintain clear visibility.

In terms of connectivity, the G34WQi offers a variety of options: two Display Ports, two HDMI 2.0 ports, and a headphone jack. Notably, the monitor lacks built-in speakers, which could be a drawback for those who prefer an all-in-one solution. The power button is a four-way directional button located on the back of the monitor, which not only powers the device but also navigates through the settings menu. This design choice makes it easy to adjust settings without any hassle.

The G34WQi is advertised as covering the entire sRGB color gamut and comes factory calibrated with a Delta-E value below 2, ensuring color accuracy. Although I don’t have a professional color accuracy measuring tool, a comparison with my 16-inch MacBook Pro showed that the colors were closely matched. Additionally, the monitor supports HDR and carries TÜV Low Blue Light Certification, which is beneficial for extended viewing periods.

The monitor’s 21:9 aspect ratio has proven advantageous for productivity tasks. For instance, running Final Cut Pro with the timeline stretched across the screen enhances workflow efficiency. The wide screen allows for more expansive views and multitasking capabilities.

As a gaming monitor, the G34WQi performs well given its price point, though it is not without limitations. The VA panel can exhibit some ghosting, which may be a concern for serious gamers who might prefer higher resolutions like 4K for a more immersive experience. Despite this, the monitor delivers satisfactory performance for its cost, making it a strong contender for those seeking a large, budget-friendly display for both gaming and work.

In summary, the Xiaomi Curved Gaming Monitor G34WQi offers an impressive combination of features at a competitive price. Its 180Hz refresh rate, large curved screen, and affordability make it an appealing choice for users on a budget. While it may not meet the highest standards for professional gaming, it provides a solid performance for casual gamers and professionals who need a spacious monitor for various tasks.
