2024 Mercedes EQS 450: Luxurious Electric SUV

2024 Mercedes-Benz EQS 450

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQS 450 sets the benchmark for luxury electric vehicles, combining an ultra-smooth ride with an impressive electric range. Priced starting at $105,550, this flagship model justifies its premium tag with its blend of comfort and performance. For this year, Mercedes has enhanced the EQS 450 with several updates. The battery technology has been optimized for better range, and a new heat pump is now standard, improving charging efficiency in cold weather. The 4Matic all-wheel drive system has been upgraded, allowing drivers to switch between all-wheel and rear-wheel drive to extend the vehicle’s range. Additionally, the MBUX Hyperscreen is now standard across all EQS models, and the second-row seats are now power-adjustable.

The EQS 450’s exterior is characterized by its large, prominent Mercedes-Benz badge and a substantial grille. However, while the front design is striking, the rest of the vehicle’s sides are rather unremarkable. Although the EQS 450 is not unattractive, it doesn’t stand out in the luxury vehicle segment with a distinctive flair. Inside, the EQS 450 is nothing short of exceptional. The cabin boasts top-tier materials and cutting-edge technology typical of a high-end Mercedes-Benz. The interior features a 56-inch Hyperscreen that spans the entire width of the dashboard, along with ambient lighting, heated and ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, and wireless charging.

Storage is generous, with a spacious bin below the floating center console and up to 31 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row in the five-seater model. The interior experience elevates every drive, making it feel as luxurious as dining at a high-end restaurant. The centerpiece of the EQS 450’s interior tech is the massive 56-inch Hyperscreen. This includes a 17.7-inch touchscreen for infotainment and a 12.3-inch touchscreen for the passenger. The vehicle comes equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Burmester audio system, and wireless device charging. However, the Burmester system had a recurring issue where it disconnected my phone whenever I exited the vehicle, which was a significant annoyance during the test week.

Powered by a 335-hp electric motor, the EQS450+ delivers robust performance, with the ability to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds. The vehicle is equipped with an adjustable air suspension and a rear-axle steering system that enhances maneuverability. Despite its substantial weight of 6,284 pounds, the EQS450+ handles with sharp steering and responsive acceleration during city driving. Sharing its 107.8-kWh battery pack with the EQS sedan, the EQS SUV benefits from improved EPA range estimates for 2024. The entry-level EQS450+ offers a claimed range of 339 miles per charge and achieves an efficiency rating of 85 MPGe combined. This substantial range makes driving the EQS450+ a pleasant experience, with fewer concerns about frequent recharging.

Although the EQS 450 is a large vehicle, it features precise steering and smooth acceleration for city commutes. Visibility can be an issue, with the center headrest on the rear seat and the triangular window, A-pillar, and mirror obstructing the view of oncoming traffic. The brake pedal requires some adjustment, but overall, the focus remains on providing a luxurious, smooth driving experience. The EQS 450 comes standard with a suite of driver-assistance technologies, including adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, and a self-parking feature. Key safety features include standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. A notable safety feature is Active Emergency Stop Assist, which activates hazard lights, slows the vehicle, and summons emergency services if the driver becomes unresponsive.

Mercedes-Benz offers a comprehensive warranty package for the EQS 450, including a four-year or 50,000-mile limited warranty, a four-year or 50,000-mile powertrain warranty, and a 10-year or 100,000-mile warranty on electrical components. However, the vehicle does not include complimentary maintenance. The 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQS 450 is designed for those seeking a high-end, luxurious electric vehicle. It excels in comfort, advanced technology, and range, making it a compelling choice for a family-oriented, luxury electric SUV. While it may not be the most visually striking in its segment, it delivers a plush, refined driving experience worthy of its price.
