Disney and Pixar’s highly anticipated sequel, Inside Out 2, has set a new record as the highest-grossing animated film of all time. Since its release last month, the film has brought in over $1.4 billion in box office revenue, underscoring its tremendous success and widespread appeal. Within just six weeks, Inside Out 2 has amassed an astonishing $1.46 billion globally. Of this, $861 million has come from international markets, while $601 million has been earned domestically. This performance surpasses previous record-holders in the animated category, such as 2019’s Frozen II, which earned $1.45 billion, 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which grossed $1.36 billion, and 2013’s Frozen, which accumulated $1.29 billion, as reported by Box Office Mojo.
The sequel features a talented voice cast, including Amy Poehler, Maya Hawke, Phyllis Smith, Lewis Black, and Tony Hale. It continues the story of the emotions inside teenage hockey player Riley’s mind. The film achieved a significant milestone by reaching $1 billion in global box office revenue within just 19 days of its release, making it the first film of 2024 to do so. This rapid success highlights both the film’s critical acclaim and its strong audience appeal. Additionally, Inside Out 2 has not only surpassed its predecessor, which grossed $857.6 million worldwide, but it has also outperformed other notable Pixar sequels. These include Incredibles 2, which earned $1.2 billion, Toy Story 4 and Toy Story 3, each with $1.1 billion, and Finding Dory, which reached $1 billion globally.
In the broader context of 2024’s film releases, Dune: Part Two has made a significant impact, becoming the second-highest-grossing film of the year. Since its release in March, the highly anticipated sci-fi sequel, starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, has grossed $711.8 million worldwide. This includes $282.1 million from domestic markets. The film’s strong performance positions it ahead of other major releases, such as Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which has earned $567.7 million globally, and Kung Fu Panda 4, with $545.6 million, according to Box Office Mojo. Dune: Part Two’s success demonstrates its strong appeal and solidifies its place in 2024’s cinematic landscape.
Despite these high-profile successes, 2024 has also seen a number of box office disappointments. Notably, Madame Web, a Spider-Man spin-off, has struggled to attract audiences, with global earnings of only $100.3 million and a disappointing $43.8 million from domestic markets. This underperformance reflects ongoing challenges for Hollywood as the industry continues to recover from pandemic-related disruptions and faces growing competition from streaming platforms. Additionally, the comedy-horror film Lisa Frankenstein has fared poorly, earning just $9.9 million worldwide. These setbacks highlight the difficulties faced by the film industry as it adapts to a rapidly changing entertainment environment.
