Shawn Mendes Reveals October Release for Self-Titled Album

Shawn Mendes

In a much-anticipated return, multiplatinum, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes has announced his new self-titled album, “Shawn,” set to release on October 18. This album marks Mendes’ fifth studio effort and comes after a significant hiatus following the cancellation of his 2022 tour. The forthcoming album promises to delve deeply into Mendes’ personal experiences and reflections over the past few years.

Mendes first hinted at his return with the announcement of the album, which is being released under Island Records. Fans eagerly awaiting new music from the artist will get a taste of the upcoming album with the lead singles “Why Why Why” and “Isn’t That Enough,” both scheduled for release on August 8. However, there is no news yet about a supporting tour, leaving fans to speculate about when they might see Mendes perform live again.

Two years ago, Mendes took to Instagram to share that he needed to postpone and ultimately cancel his highly anticipated Wonder: The World Tour. The decision was driven by a need to prioritize his mental health, a move he described in an emotional post to his followers. At that time, Mendes expressed his struggle with the demands of touring, stating, “I started this tour excited to finally get back to playing live after a long break due to the pandemic, but the reality is I was not at all ready for how difficult touring would be after this time away. It has become more clear that I need to take the time I’ve never taken personally, to ground myself and come back stronger… This doesn’t mean I won’t be making new music, and I can’t wait to see you on tour in the future. I know you all have been waiting so long to see these shows, and it breaks my heart to tell you this but I promise I will be back as soon as I’ve taken the right time to heal. I love you all and thank you all so much for supporting me and sticking by me on this journey.”

Mendes’ return to social media to announce his new project reflects a journey of personal and artistic rediscovery. He shared his thoughts on the process of creating the album, saying, “Music really can be medicine. Two years ago, I felt like I had no idea who I was. A year ago, I couldn’t step into a studio without falling into complete panic. So to be here right now with 12 beautiful finished songs feels like such a gift. Honestly thank god for my friends and family. Life can be brutal but having a small group of people you deeply trust to walk you through makes it so much better. I hope you love this album, I do. I do. I hope it makes you feel warm and close to the earth like it does for me.”

The album, “Shawn,” is a product of Mendes’ collaboration with an impressive roster of producers and co-writers. Mendes co-wrote and co-produced the album with Scott Harris and Mike Sabath, known for his work on Raye’s “My 21st Century Blues.” Nate Mercereau, who has worked with Andre 3000 on “New Blue Sun,” and Eddie Benjamin also contributed to the album. The songwriting process took place over two years and involved a variety of locations, including Costa Rica, Rhinebeck, NY, Washington State, Nashville, and New York City. The record also features contributions from Grammy-winning writer Amy Allen and Ethan Gruska, known for his collaborations with Bon Iver and Phoebe Bridgers. Additionally, the album includes instrumentation by Chris Thile of Punch Brothers, adding a distinctive touch to the project.

Mendes’ self-titled album is expected to offer a profound exploration of his inner world, as the songs aim to guide listeners through a meaningful self-dialogue. The album’s creation was deeply influenced by Mendes’ personal experiences, reflecting a period of significant growth and introspection. Fans and critics alike are anticipating the release, eager to hear how Mendes’ time away from the spotlight has shaped his music and personal expression.

With this new album, Shawn Mendes is set to make a powerful comeback, offering his audience a collection of songs that resonate with his personal journey and artistic evolution. As the release date approaches, fans will be watching closely for more updates and hoping for a future tour announcement that will allow them to experience Mendes’ new work live. For now, the release of “Why Why Why” and “Isn’t That Enough” will provide a glimpse into what Mendes has been working on and mark the beginning of a new chapter in his musical career.
