2024 Mazda CX-90: Mazda’s Luxury SUV Upgrade

2024 Mazda CX90

Mazda has made significant strides in its journey from a popular brand to a premium luxury contender with the introduction of the 2024 Mazda CX-90. This new flagship model, a three-row SUV, signifies a major leap in Mazda’s evolution, combining upscale features with the brand’s renowned driving enjoyment. Priced between $39,000 and $59,000, the CX-90 not only redefines Mazda’s approach to luxury but also firmly establishes it as a key player in the upscale SUV market.

The transition from the Mazda CX-9 to the CX-90 reflects Mazda’s response to the increasing demand for more spacious and luxurious three-row SUVs. The CX-90 addresses this demand with its larger dimensions, offering enhanced passenger space and comfort compared to its predecessor. With the capacity to accommodate up to eight passengers, the CX-90 surpasses the CX-9’s seven-passenger limit and provides additional legroom and headroom in the third row. Where the CX-90 truly stands out is in its upgraded powertrain options and luxurious features, which are often found in high-end brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The introduction of new, more powerful engines and sophisticated technology sets the CX-90 apart from previous models and aligns it with the high standards of premium vehicles.

True to the nature of luxury vehicles, the CX-90’s design incorporates high-quality materials even in its more affordable trims. The base model, the Turbo Select, includes leatherette seating, three-zone climate control, and adaptive cruise control, offering a luxurious feel without the premium price tag. Moving up the trim levels, buyers can opt for four different types of Nappa leather for the seats, doors, and dashboard, along with heated second-row captain’s chairs and enhanced ambient lighting, further elevating the vehicle’s luxury status.

One of the most notable upgrades in the CX-90 is its range of powerful engines. The new inline six-cylinder Turbo models boost horsepower to 280 hp, a significant increase from the CX-9’s 227 hp. For those seeking even greater performance, the Turbo S models deliver an impressive 340 hp. Additionally, the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) version combines a four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to produce 323 hp and offers 25 miles of all-electric driving. This power boost is complemented by a mild hybrid system, indicated by the eSkyactive badge, enhancing the overall driving experience. Mazda has also focused on improving the ride quality with technology designed to minimize harsh road experiences. The CX-90’s chassis and seating adapt to road conditions, making for a smoother and more comfortable ride, a feature first introduced in the MX-5 Miata and CX-30.

Mazda provides flexibility in fuel choices for the CX-90, allowing owners to opt for either regular or premium fuel. Using premium fuel, the Turbo engines achieve their full potential, with the Turbo models reaching 280 hp and the Turbo S models 340 hp. Regular fuel will still perform well but results in slightly reduced power, with 255 hp for the Turbo models and 315 hp for the Turbo S. The PHEV, while tuned for premium fuel, can also run on regular, though this will lower its horsepower from 323 to 319.

The CX-90’s center display, while similar in shape to other Mazda models, is slightly larger and now touch-sensitive in higher trims like the Turbo S and Premium Plus. This addition allows for easier navigation of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto features. Although Mazda has traditionally favored a dial controller for safety and ease of use, the demand for touchscreens and voice activation may lead to future upgrades in the CX-90’s technology. One standout feature is the driver personalization system, which uses a camera to scan and create a custom driver profile. This system adjusts the seat position, mirrors, and steering wheel to optimize comfort. While similar systems exist in brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz, Mazda’s comprehensive approach offers a highly personalized driving experience.

Mazda’s move into the premium segment has been gradual but deliberate. Starting with luxury leather interiors and advanced technology like the head-up display in even budget models, Mazda has been setting the stage for a more upscale presence. The CX-90, with its powerful engines, innovative driver personalization system, and luxurious details, signifies Mazda’s commitment to thoughtful luxury. This flagship model not only meets but exceeds expectations, positioning Mazda firmly on the path to becoming a key player in the premium luxury SUV market.
