Trump Prefers Mahomes Over Swift After Endorsement

Former President Donald Trump recently drew a stark comparison between Taylor Swift and Brittany Mahomes, the wife of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. This remark came just a day after Trump’s debate with Vice President Kamala Harris, who had received a notable endorsement from Swift. In a call to “Fox & Friends,” Trump expressed his preference for Brittany Mahomes over Swift, saying, “Well, I actually like Mrs. Mahomes much better, if you want to know the truth.” He described Mahomes as a “big Trump fan” and suggested that Swift’s endorsement of Harris was indicative of her liberal political stance. Trump went on to criticize Swift, suggesting that her frequent endorsements of Democrats might harm her popularity, and added, “I was not a Taylor Swift fan,” indicating a long-standing disapproval of the singer.

Later in the day, Trump’s running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, also weighed in on the matter during a Fox News segment. While Vance acknowledged Swift’s musical achievements, he downplayed the significance of her political endorsements, questioning whether her views, as a “billionaire celebrity,” resonated with the average American. Vance implied that Swift’s detachment from the everyday concerns of most people made her influence less impactful.

Swift’s endorsement of Kamala Harris came shortly after Tuesday night’s presidential debate, making it a highly discussed topic. In an Instagram post, Swift praised Harris as a “steady-handed, gifted leader” and expressed support for a leadership style characterized by calm rather than chaos. Swift’s post also highlighted Harris’s running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, for his advocacy on LGBTQ+ rights and reproductive issues. Additionally, Swift used the post to address the spread of AI-generated images falsely suggesting her support for Trump, and humorously signed off with “Taylor Swift, Childless Cat Lady,” a reference to a previous criticism by JD Vance of Democrats as “childless cat ladies.”

Brittany Mahomes, 29, is known for her role as a former professional soccer player and as a co-owner of the Kansas City Current women’s soccer team. Her brief engagement with a Trump Instagram post in August stirred controversy, particularly when she later removed her like from the post. She addressed the backlash in an Instagram story, suggesting that “haters” have unresolved issues from their past. Trump, in turn, expressed gratitude for Mahomes’s defense of him on Truth Social, showcasing his appreciation for her support. Mahomes’s association with Taylor Swift, who has been seen publicly with Mahomes since dating Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, has also drawn attention, especially after Swift’s endorsement of Harris and the subsequent criticism from some fans who felt it conflicted with her past support for Democratic candidates.

Trump has previously expressed disdain for Taylor Swift, particularly since she began making political endorsements. In an interview published in June by Variety editor Ramin Setoodeh, Trump remarked on Swift’s liberal views and questioned their authenticity. Despite Trump’s critical stance, Swift’s political endorsements have been influential, especially among younger voters. Her 2018 endorsement of Democrat Phil Bredesen led to a significant surge in voter registration, and her 2020 support for President Joe Biden continued this trend. As the 2024 presidential race unfolds, Swift’s endorsement of Harris is expected to spark further debate and potentially mobilize voters, while Trump remains critical of celebrities who publicly oppose him.
