Samsung Unveils 990 EVO Plus SSDs for Laptops

SSD '990 EVO Plus

Samsung Electronics has taken a significant step in the storage market with the launch of its new 990 EVO Plus SSDs, a vital upgrade for laptop users seeking enhanced performance and efficiency. As storage becomes increasingly affordable and abundant, now is an excellent time for users to consider upgrading their solid-state drives (SSDs). The 990 EVO Plus is designed for various user profiles, including gamers, professionals, and content creators, with features that promise to elevate computing experiences.

According to James Fishler, Senior Vice President of Home Entertainment at Samsung Electronics America, the need for high-performance storage has never been greater. He states, “The average person creates more than 100 megabytes of data every minute.” Whether capturing photos, editing videos, or engaging in intensive gaming sessions, the demands of modern activities require robust storage solutions. The 990 EVO Plus, with its expanded capacities and accelerated processing speeds, is positioned as an optimal choice for meeting these demands. Fishler emphasizes that this SSD is designed to support users’ diverse needs, from content creation to business applications, ensuring that daily activities can be powered efficiently.

One of the standout features of the 990 EVO Plus is its impressive performance specifications. The SSD boasts sequential read speeds of up to 7,250MB/s and write speeds reaching 6,300MB/s. This represents a substantial 50% increase in speed compared to its predecessor, the 990 EVO. The enhanced performance can be attributed to the incorporation of Samsung’s latest 8th generation V-NAND technology and a cutting-edge 5-nanometer controller. Additionally, a nickel-coated heat shield is integrated into the design, significantly reducing overheating risks and offering a remarkable 73% improvement in power efficiency over the previous model.

For users who require high-capacity storage, the 990 EVO Plus comes in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB configurations, pushing beyond the limits set by the earlier 990 EVO. The 4TB variant showcases remarkable random read capabilities of 1,050K input/output operations per second (IOPS) and 1,400K IOPS for random write operations. This level of performance rivals that of SSDs equipped with DRAM, despite the 990 EVO Plus lacking a DRAM cache. This feature makes it particularly well-suited for gaming and artificial intelligence applications that demand rapid data processing and storage.

The 990 EVO Plus also incorporates the intelligent Samsung TurboWrite 2.0 technology, which has been enhanced to optimize performance further. This technology allows for rapid file transfers and minimizes lag, making it an excellent choice for tasks that involve large file management, high-resolution video editing, or next-gen gaming experiences.

Samsung recognizes that the need for effective data management is crucial, and as such, the 990 EVO Plus is compatible with Samsung Magician Software. This suite of optimization tools enhances the functionality of the SSD, providing users with features that streamline data migration during upgrades. Additionally, Samsung Magician helps safeguard user data by monitoring drive health and offering customizable performance enhancements, ensuring that users can maximize their investment in storage technology.

Pricing for the new Samsung 990 EVO Plus SSDs is set competitively, with the manufacturer’s suggested retail prices listed at $109.99 for the 1TB model, $184.99 for the 2TB variant, and $344.99 for the 4TB option. This pricing structure reflects Samsung’s commitment to making high-performance storage accessible to a wide range of consumers, from casual users to professional creators.

For those considering an upgrade, the technical specifications of the 990 EVO Plus are noteworthy. The SSD employs a PCIe Gen 4.0 x4 / 5.0 x2 NVMe 2.0 interface and features an M.2 (2280) form factor, utilizing Samsung’s proprietary V-NAND 3-bit TLC storage memory and an in-house controller for superior performance. Users can expect sequential read and write speeds of up to 7,250 MB/s and 6,300 MB/s, respectively. The random read and write speeds (QD32) stand out as well, reaching up to 850K IOPS for random reads and 1,350K IOPS for random writes on the 1TB and 2TB models, while the 4TB model achieves even higher performance figures.

In terms of data security, the 990 EVO Plus features AES 256-bit Full Disk Encryption, TCG/Opal V2.0 compliance, and encrypted drive capabilities under IEEE 1667 standards. Samsung offers a substantial total bytes written rating of 600TB for the 1TB model, 1200TB for the 2TB model, and 2400TB for the 4TB model. The product comes with a five-year limited warranty, underscoring Samsung’s confidence in the reliability and longevity of its storage solutions.

In summary, Samsung’s 990 EVO Plus SSDs stand out in the increasingly competitive storage market, combining speed, efficiency, and intelligent features that cater to the modern user’s needs. With their launch, users can look forward to a significant enhancement in their laptop’s performance, ensuring they are well-equipped to handle the demands of today’s data-driven world. The new SSDs will be available this Fall through Samsung’s website and select retailers, making it an exciting time for consumers eager to upgrade their storage solutions.
