Meta Unveils AR Glasses, Quest 3S, and AI Features

At the recent Meta Connect 2024 event, CEO Mark Zuckerberg introduced an array of innovative products and features that underscore the company’s commitment to advancing mixed reality and artificial intelligence. The announcements encompassed virtual reality (VR) headsets, augmented reality (AR) glasses, and new AI capabilities, reflecting Meta’s ambition to transform how users engage with technology.

One of the most captivating highlights of the event was the unveiling of a prototype of Meta’s first AR glasses, codenamed Orion. While a release date for this product remains undisclosed, its introduction marks a significant milestone in Meta’s ongoing research and development endeavors. The design of Orion draws parallels to Google’s ambitious yet ultimately abandoned Glass project from 2015. The Orion glasses operate on an innovative technology that overlays virtual information onto the user’s visual field. Rather than utilizing a traditional screen, Orion employs light diffraction to project holographic images. Meta also announced the Quest 3S, a more budget-friendly variant of last year’s Quest 3 headset. Such tools are particularly advantageous for content creators and marketers aiming to connect with diverse global audiences. However, the recent EU AI Act means these features will not be accessible to users in Europe for the time being. Continuing its collaboration with Ray-Ban, Meta revealed updates to its smart glasses lineup. The latest iteration boasts improved AI integration, enabling more natural interactions with Meta’s virtual assistant and enhancing object recognition abilities. New features introduced include video AI and real-time translation, as well as expanded partnerships with popular services such as Spotify, Amazon Music, and Audible. These enhancements aim to solidify the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses’ position within the competitive wearable tech market.
