Toyota GR86 to Boost Performance with Turbo Hybrid Power

In a remarkable automotive partnership that began in 2012, Toyota and Subaru launched the highly acclaimed Scion FR-S, known as the Toyota 86 in Japan and the GT86 in various other markets, alongside the Subaru BRZ coupes. This collaboration has proven to be one of the most successful ventures in the Japanese automotive industry. The duo quickly gained a loyal following among car enthusiasts, thanks to their striking designs, rear-wheel-drive configurations, and responsive 2.0-liter naturally aspirated boxer engines.

From 2012 to 2021, the FR-S recorded nearly 80,000 sales, establishing itself as a significant player in the sports coupe segment. Following its success, both manufacturers introduced the second-generation models in 2021, which featured enhanced proportions and significant engine upgrades. The new models, now referred to as the GR86, have sold approximately 23,000 units, further solidifying their position as some of the most desirable coupes in the customization market.

The original FR-S and Subaru BRZ were powered by a Subaru-sourced 2.0-liter boxer engine that produced 200 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. This powertrain was available with both six-speed manual and automatic transmission options. The second-generation models saw a substantial upgrade with the introduction of a larger 2.4-liter boxer engine, boosting output to 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, these models were equipped with more robust four-piston Brembo brakes, enhancing their performance capabilities.

Looking ahead, the third-generation GR86 is anticipated to make its debut in late 2025, and it promises to raise the bar yet again. While maintaining the beloved rear-wheel-drive layout, this new iteration will replace the Subaru boxer engine with what is arguably one of Toyota’s most revered engines in motorsport—the rally-bred 1.6-liter four-cylinder inline turbocharged unit from the GR Yaris. This engine, known for its remarkable performance, has already established a formidable reputation in the World Rally Championship but is not available in the North American market. However, the GR Corolla, which shares the same engine and a four-wheel-drive powertrain, is available in the U.S.

The new turbocharged engine is expected to deliver an impressive output of over 300 horsepower, promising thrilling performance for driving enthusiasts. In a move that underscores Toyota’s commitment to blending power with efficiency, this engine will also incorporate the well-established Toyota Hybrid System II (THS II). This hybrid system is designed to provide a remarkable combination of power and fuel efficiency, appealing to a broad range of consumers.

According to Best Car, Japan’s leading automotive magazine, the hybrid system featured in the upcoming GR86 will differ from the front-drive THS hybrid system found in the Prius. Instead, it will utilize a rear-wheel-drive parallel hybrid system sourced from the Land Cruiser 250 and Lexus GX. This approach aims to enhance the driving experience while ensuring that the GR86 remains true to its performance-oriented roots.

An exciting development for the GR86 is that Toyota is now taking the lead in research and development, marking a shift away from the previous arrangement with Subaru. After 12 years of collaboration, Toyota will employ a platform, engine, and hybrid system developed in-house, utilizing some of its most advanced components. This change not only demonstrates Toyota’s confidence in its engineering capabilities but also indicates a desire to create a more distinctive and powerful sports coupe that meets the evolving demands of the market. It is also expected that the Subaru BRZ will adopt this powertrain, creating further synergy between the two brands.

In terms of design, the next-generation GR86 is likely to retain similar proportions to the current model while introducing sharper and more aggressive styling cues. Inspiration for the new design will draw from various sources, including the Toyota GR GT3 concept car showcased at the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon. This concept features a long nose, short rear deck, and a body-wide headlight panel, all of which reflect a bold new design direction that the next GR86 is expected to follow.

As enthusiasts eagerly await the unveiling of the next-gen GR86, the anticipation continues to build. With significant performance enhancements, a powerful turbocharged hybrid engine, and a more aggressive design language, the 2025 model promises to be a worthy successor to its predecessors. Both Toyota and Subaru are poised to deliver a compelling sports coupe that captures the essence of driving pleasure while meeting the demands of a modern automotive landscape.
