Beauchamp at a Crossroads as Deadline Approaches

MarJon Beauchamp

When the Milwaukee Bucks chose MarJon Beauchamp with the 24th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, they envisioned him as a key component of their future—a versatile three-and-D wing capable of complementing stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Khris Middleton, and their established veteran core. However, the promise they saw in Beauchamp has not yet materialized into impactful performances on the court. As the adage goes, “potential is just another way of saying you haven’t done it yet,” and for Beauchamp, the clock is ticking.

As he enters his third NBA season, Beauchamp finds himself at a crucial juncture in his career. The Bucks must decide by October 31 whether to exercise the fourth-year option on his rookie contract, which would see his salary nearly double from $2.7 million this season to $4.8 million in the next. This decision carries significant weight as Milwaukee currently faces the third-highest payroll in the league, compounded by an astonishing $75 million in luxury tax payments. Given these financial pressures, the Bucks must be judicious with their resources; spending an extra $2 million on a player who has yet to deliver substantial returns would be difficult to justify.

Beyond the financial implications, Beauchamp’s performance in the upcoming season will play a pivotal role in determining his future with the team. Over his first two seasons in Milwaukee, he has averaged just 4.8 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 0.7 assists per game, while shooting 43.3 percent from the field and 35.5 percent from beyond the arc. These statistics don’t indicate a player ready to step into a significant role on a championship-caliber team, though there are signs of potential waiting to be unlocked.

One area where Beauchamp has shown marked improvement is his three-point shooting. He enhanced his long-range accuracy significantly, going from 33.1 percent as a rookie to an impressive 40 percent in his sophomore campaign. This improvement is a positive indication that he could establish a reliable foundation for his game, which is crucial in the modern NBA.

The Bucks do not require Beauchamp to be a primary scorer; that responsibility falls on the shoulders of Antetokounmpo, Middleton, and newly acquired Damian Lillard. Instead, Milwaukee needs Beauchamp to space the floor and capitalize on open shot opportunities when they arise. Last season, he demonstrated competence in catch-and-shoot situations, hitting 48 percent of his attempts from three-point range, but the volume was alarmingly low, with only one attempt per game. Additionally, his corner three-point shooting saw an uptick from 36 percent as a rookie to 48 percent in year two, albeit on a mere 27 attempts. The coaching staff would like to see him increase his shooting volume while maintaining this efficiency, as consistent floor-spacing could make him a valuable asset in Milwaukee’s offensive strategy.

However, shooting prowess is only part of what Beauchamp brings to the table; his defensive potential is equally critical. Standing at 6-foot-6 with a seven-foot wingspan, Beauchamp possesses the physical attributes the Bucks need for effective wing defense, especially given the presence of elite forwards in the Eastern Conference, such as those on the Boston Celtics. Milwaukee’s aspirations for another Finals run likely hinge on their ability to compete against these formidable opponents. Unfortunately, Beauchamp’s defensive contributions have yet to match his physical tools. While he has displayed flashes of capability on that end of the floor, he has struggled to put it all together consistently. His lateral quickness is not elite, which often leaves him vulnerable against quicker adversaries.

Moreover, Beauchamp has shown a tendency to overcommit during defensive plays, making him susceptible to being exploited off the dribble. For him to secure a stable role in the Bucks’ rotation, he needs to demonstrate greater consistency and discipline on the defensive end. The team is not expecting him to emerge as an All-Defensive player, but they do require reliability from him, especially as concerns linger regarding the team’s wing depth.

With the October 31 deadline rapidly approaching, this month is poised to be career-defining for Beauchamp. His performance during the Summer League raised some eyebrows and sparked concern, placing additional pressure on him to showcase his skills in training camp and the preseason. The key for Beauchamp will be to grasp his role within the team’s structure, deferring to the stars while letting the game come to him. Whether it involves knocking down open shots or approaching defense with a controlled aggression, he must find ways to contribute positively.

In many respects, October stands as a make-or-break moment for Beauchamp. He has the chance to demonstrate that he is worthy of a spot in the Bucks’ long-term plans or risk slipping into obscurity as the organization considers whether to decline his fourth-year option. The stakes couldn’t be higher, and in this high-pressure environment, the old adage rings true: pressure either makes diamonds or bursts pipes. Only time will tell which outcome awaits MarJon Beauchamp as he embarks on this critical phase of his young career.
