Adi Burjorji Godrej, born on April 3, 1942, in Bombay, British India, is a prominent Indian industrialist and the patriarch of the Godrej family. As the chairman of the Godrej Group, he has been instrumental in transforming the conglomerate into a diversified and modernized entity. As of August 2024, his net worth was estimated at $3.8 billion.
In recent years, the Godrej Group has undergone significant leadership changes. In 2021, Adi Godrej announced his decision to step down as chairman of Godrej Industries Ltd (GIL), the group’s flagship company, effective October 1, 2021. His younger brother, Nadir Godrej, who previously served as the managing director, assumed the role of chairman and managing director of GIL. Adi Godrej continues to serve as chairman emeritus of the company.
Similarly, in August 2021, Adi Godrej stepped down from the board of Godrej Consumer Products Ltd (GCPL), passing the leadership to his younger daughter, Nisaba Godrej, who serves as the chairperson and managing director. He remains as chairman emeritus of GCPL, ensuring his continued association with the company’s strategic direction.
In May 2024, the Godrej family announced an amicable settlement to realign their shareholdings within the group’s companies. This realignment led to the Adi-Nadir and Jamshyd-Smita families buying each other’s stakes in their respective companies. As a result, the Adi and Nadir Godrej faction now controls Godrej Industries, Godrej Properties, and Godrej Consumer Products, while the Jamshyd Godrej family oversees the unlisted Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing Company.
Further consolidating their holdings, in July 2024, the Adi-Nadir Godrej family acquired a 12.65% stake worth Rs 3,803 crore from RKN Enterprises in Godrej Industries. Nadir Godrej acquired a 7.57% stake worth Rs 2,277 crore, while Adi Godrej’s three children each acquired a 1.69% stake worth Rs 509 crore. This strategic move underscores the family’s commitment to strengthening their position within the conglomerate.
Beyond his business acumen, Adi Godrej is renowned for his philanthropic contributions. Under his leadership, 25% of the shares of the Godrej holding company are held in trusts, including the Pirojsha Godrej Foundation, the Soonabai Pirojsha Godrej Foundation, and the Godrej Memorial Trust. These trusts support various initiatives in healthcare, education, and environmental sustainability, such as The Mangroves, Teach for India, WWF, and the Godrej Memorial Hospital.
Adi Godrej was married to socialite and philanthropist Parmeshwar Godrej until her passing in October 2016. They have three children: Nisaba Godrej, Pirojsha Godrej, and Tanya Dubash, all of whom hold significant positions within the Godrej Group. The family resides in Malabar Hill, South Mumbai.
Adi Godrej’s strategic foresight and leadership have been pivotal in steering the Godrej Group through significant transitions and expansions. His recent decisions reflect a commitment to ensuring the conglomerate’s continued growth and adaptability in a dynamic business environment. As the group embraces new leadership and consolidates its holdings, Adi Godrej’s legacy of innovation, integrity, and philanthropy remains deeply embedded in the organization’s ethos.
