Babasaheb Neelkanth Kalyani, popularly known as Baba Kalyani, stands as a towering figure in India’s industrial landscape. Born on January 7, 1949, in Pune, Maharashtra, he has been instrumental in transforming Bharat Forge into a global leader in the forging industry. His journey from a mechanical engineering student to a billionaire entrepreneur exemplifies his unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation.
Kalyani’s academic journey began at the Rashtriya Military School in Belgaum, followed by studies at Dr. (Mrs.) Erin N. Nagarvala School in Pune. He pursued a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons.) in Mechanical Engineering from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, graduating in 1970. Furthering his education, he earned a Master of Science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
In 1972, Kalyani joined Bharat Forge, the flagship company of the Kalyani Group, which was founded by his father, Neelakanth Rao Kalyani. Under his leadership, Bharat Forge expanded its operations globally, becoming the world’s second-largest forging manufacturer after Germany’s ThyssenKrupp. The company diversified into various sectors, including automotive, aerospace, and energy, solidifying its position in the global market.
Kalyani’s strategic vision led to the establishment of Kenersys Limited, a company focused on manufacturing energy-efficient wind turbines. This initiative underscores his commitment to sustainable energy solutions. Additionally, Bharat Forge, in collaboration with KPIT Cummins, is developing hybrid solutions to meet India’s vehicular emission targets, reflecting Kalyani’s dedication to environmental sustainability.
In December 2023, Kalyani faced a significant setback when he lost his board seat at Hikal Limited, a chemical company where he had served for 31 years. The dispute arose from a family disagreement with his sister, Sugandha Hiremath, who holds a substantial stake in Hikal. The shareholder vote resulted in Kalyani failing to secure the necessary votes to continue as a director, marking a notable change in the company’s leadership.
Beyond his business endeavors, Kalyani is deeply involved in philanthropic activities. He founded the Pratham Pune Education Foundation in 2000, an NGO dedicated to providing primary education to underprivileged children in the local community. His contributions to trade and industry have been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Padma Bhushan in 2008 and the Bundesverdienstkreuz (Cross of Order of Merit) from Germany in 2012.
Kalyani’s son, Amit Kalyani, has been actively involved in the family business, contributing to the group’s growth and diversification. Amit’s leadership in various capacities within the Kalyani Group signifies the family’s commitment to sustaining and expanding their industrial legacy.
Baba Kalyani’s journey from a young engineering student to a prominent industrialist reflects his vision, resilience, and dedication. His leadership has not only propelled Bharat Forge to international acclaim but has also significantly contributed to India’s industrial growth and technological advancement. As he continues to navigate the challenges and opportunities of the global market, Kalyani’s legacy as a visionary leader remains firmly established.
