Charles Edelstenne Steps Down: End of an Era at Dassault Empire

A significant leadership transition occurred at one of France’s most influential business empires as Charles Edelstenne, a pivotal figure in the Dassault group, stepped down from his position as chairman of Groupe Industriel Marcel Dassault (GIMD) on January 9, 2025. At 87 years old, Edelstenne’s departure marks the end of a remarkable era in French industrial leadership, with Eric Trappier taking the helm as his successor.

Edelstenne’s journey with the Dassault group spans several decades, during which he has been instrumental in shaping the conglomerate’s success across multiple sectors. His career highlights include founding Dassault Systèmes and serving as its Chairman until January 9, 2023, where he transitioned to the role of Honorary Chairman and Director. His leadership portfolio extended to various positions, including Chairman and CEO of Dassault Aviation from 2000 to 2013.

Under Edelstenne’s stewardship, the Dassault empire flourished across diverse sectors, including software, real estate, wine production, media, and aerospace. The group’s media interests include the prestigious Le Figaro newspaper, while its aviation division has maintained France’s position as a global leader in military and civilian aircraft manufacturing.

The transition comes at a time when the Dassault family continues to rank among France’s wealthiest, holding the sixth position with business assets valued at over 28 billion euros according to recent rankings. Edelstenne’s financial acumen and strategic vision have been crucial in maintaining and expanding this industrial empire, which he has led since 2018 following the passing of Serge Dassault.

His successor, Eric Trappier, brings extensive experience to his new role, having served as CEO of Dassault Aviation since 2013. Trappier, aged 64, has already proven his capabilities by transforming the Rafale fighter jet into a successful export product. He will maintain his position as CEO of Dassault Aviation while assuming the chairmanship of GIMD.

Edelstenne’s influence extends beyond the Dassault group, as evidenced by his numerous board positions and directorships. He serves as a director at major French companies including Thales and Carrefour, and holds the position of Honorary Chairman of Gifas (French Aerospace Industries Association). His expertise in financial matters, supported by his chartered accountant qualification, has been instrumental in the strategic financial planning of the various enterprises under his leadership.

The transition represents more than just a change in leadership; it symbolizes the careful succession planning that has characterized the Dassault group’s management approach. Edelstenne will continue to contribute to the group’s future as Honorary Chairman, ensuring a smooth transition while maintaining the stability that has been a hallmark of his leadership style.

Under Edelstenne’s guidance, Dassault Systèmes has evolved into a global leader in 3D design software, while Dassault Aviation has maintained its position as a premier manufacturer of both military and civilian aircraft. The group’s diversified portfolio, including luxury wines and real estate investments, stands as a testament to his strategic vision and business acumen.

As the Dassault group enters this new chapter under Trappier’s leadership, Edelstenne’s legacy of innovation, strategic growth, and sustainable business practices will continue to influence the company’s direction. His transformation from a chartered accountant to one of France’s most influential business leaders serves as an inspiration in French industrial history.
