Gregorio Pérez Companc, born Jorge Gregorio Bazán on August 23, 1934, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, was a prominent businessman who became one of the nation’s wealthiest individuals. Adopted in 1945 by Margarita Companc de Pérez Acuña, he later married María del Carmen “Munchi” Sundblad Beccar Varela in 1964, with whom he had eight children.
Pérez Companc’s business acumen led him to helm Petrolera Pérez Companc, a conglomerate in oil and gas established by his adoptive father in 1946. Under his leadership, the company expanded significantly, especially during Argentina’s privatization era between 1990 and 1994. In 1998, he acquired a controlling stake in Molinos Río de la Plata, a leading food processing company in Argentina.
In October 2002, Pérez Companc sold his 60% share of Petrolera Pérez Companc to Brazilian oil giant Petrobras for approximately $1 billion. By December 2009, he stepped down from active business roles, transferring his 75% stake in Molinos Río de la Plata to his children.
The Pérez Companc family has remained influential in Argentina’s business landscape. In May 2024, three of his children—Luis, Rosario, and Pilar—purchased the shares of their siblings Jorge, Cecilia, and Catalina in Molinos Río de la Plata, Molinos Agro, and Pecom for an estimated $550 million. This strategic move consolidated their control over these key enterprises.
On June 14, 2024, Gregorio Pérez Companc passed away at the age of 89. His legacy endures through his family’s continued commitment to Argentina’s economic development and their philanthropic endeavors.
