Hamilton Evans “Tony” James, born on February 3, 1951, in Wyandotte, Michigan, is a distinguished American businessman renowned for his significant contributions to the finance industry and his active involvement in various philanthropic endeavors. As of January 2025, Forbes estimates his net worth at $4.8 billion, reflecting his substantial impact in both business and charitable sectors.

James embarked on his academic journey at Harvard College, where he graduated magna cum laude in 1973 as a John Harvard Scholar. He furthered his education at Harvard Business School, earning an MBA in 1975 as a Baker Scholar. His professional career commenced at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette (DLJ) in 1975, where he ascended to head the global mergers and acquisitions group by 1982. In 1985, he founded DLJ Merchant Banking, Inc., and later served as chairman of the banking group following DLJ’s acquisition by Credit Suisse First Boston in 2000.

In 2002, James joined The Blackstone Group, a global asset management firm, as president and chief operating officer. Under his leadership, Blackstone expanded its assets under management to over $1 trillion. He retired as executive vice chairman in January 2022, having played a pivotal role in the firm’s growth and success.

Beyond his tenure at Blackstone, James has held influential positions in various organizations. In August 2017, he was appointed chairman of Costco Wholesale Corporation, a role he continues to fulfill, steering the company through a dynamic retail landscape. His commitment to the arts and culture is evident through his service on the boards of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where he has been co-chair since 2021, and the Wildlife Conservation Society. Additionally, he has been involved with the Second Stage Theatre, Trout Unlimited, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, and the Montana Land Reliance.

In 2023, President Joe Biden appointed James to the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board, underscoring his expertise and trustworthiness in matters of national importance.

James married Amabel George Boyce in August 1973, and the couple has three children. They have resided in New York City, with James reportedly purchasing a $24.9 million apartment at 834 Fifth Avenue in 2011.

As of January 2025, James continues to serve as chairman of Costco Wholesale Corporation, a position he has held since 2017. His leadership has been instrumental in navigating the challenges posed by the retail industry, including the global pandemic and shifting consumer behaviors. His role at the Metropolitan Museum of Art remains significant, where he co-chairs the board of trustees, contributing to the institution’s strategic direction and financial health.
