Hubert Burda, born on February 9, 1940, in Heidelberg, Germany, stands as a prominent figure in the global media landscape. As the owner, publisher, and general partner of Hubert Burda Media, he has been instrumental in shaping the company’s evolution into an international media conglomerate. The organization boasts over 600 media products, encompassing websites, print magazines, and various brands, operating across 20 countries, with a significant presence in Germany and the UK. Notable brands under his leadership include Focus, Bunte, and Radio Times.
The youngest son of publishing couple Franz and Aenne Burda, Hubert was initially inclined towards painting during his youth. However, he heeded his father’s advice to pursue art history, enrolling at Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. There, he studied under Hans Sedlmayr, focusing on art history, archaeology, and sociology. He earned his doctorate in art history before the age of 26, with a dissertation titled Die Ruine in Hubert Robert’s Pictures.
In 1974, Burda assumed the role of publishing director for the magazine Bild und Funk. Demonstrating his entrepreneurial spirit, he founded m – The Magazine For Men in 1969. By 1987, he became the sole shareholder and CEO of Burda Holding, later rebranding it as Hubert Burda Media in 1999. Under his stewardship, the company expanded its digital and international operations, forming joint ventures with entities like Hachette, Microsoft, and Rizzoli, and extending its reach into countries such as Singapore, Thailand, India, and Russia.
In December 2024, Hubert Burda announced a significant generational shift within the company. Effective February 1, 2025, his children, Elisabeth Burda Furtwängler (32) and Dr. Jacob Burda (34), will assume entrepreneurial and publishing responsibilities for Hubert Burda Media. This transition marks the fourth generation at the helm of the family-owned business, which has been active in publishing since 1903. Hubert Burda will retire from the Group’s Board of Directors at the end of January 2025, just before his 85th birthday, and will continue his association with the company as a General Partner and Honorary Chairman.
Beyond his business endeavors, Burda has been deeply involved in philanthropic activities. In 2001, he established the Felix Burda Foundation, dedicated to the early detection and prevention of colon cancer, named in memory of his son Felix, who succumbed to the disease. He also founded the Hubert Burda Foundation in 1999, focusing on literature, international understanding, art, culture, and science. His commitment to fostering German-Jewish reconciliation is evident through various initiatives, including the project Paten für Toleranz to support the Jewish Centre Jakobsplatz in Munich.
Hubert Burda’s personal life has been marked by significant relationships. He married art historian Christa Maar in 1967, and the couple divorced in 1972. They had a son, Felix, who tragically passed away in 2001. In 1991, he married actress and doctor Maria Furtwängler, with whom he has two children, Jakob and Elisabeth.
As of January 2025, Hubert Burda continues to be a significant figure in the media industry, with his children poised to lead Hubert Burda Media into its next chapter. The company’s commitment to innovation and cultural engagement remains steadfast, reflecting the enduring legacy of its founder.
