Katharine Rayner, born Katharine Ann Johnson in 1945 in Atlanta, Georgia, is an American billionaire heiress renowned for her substantial stake in Cox Enterprises, a prominent media and automotive conglomerate. She is the daughter of Anne Cox Chambers, a distinguished media mogul and philanthropist, and Louis G. Johnson. Katharine’s maternal grandfather, James M. Cox, founded Cox Enterprises, which has grown into a significant player in the media and automotive industries. Katharine has a sister, Margaretta Taylor, and a half-brother, James Cox Chambers, from her mother’s second marriage.

Katharine pursued higher education at Sarah Lawrence College, earning a bachelor’s degree in Arts/Science. Following her studies, she became involved in the family business, Cox Enterprises. In 2015, her mother, Anne Cox Chambers, distributed her 49% share in the company equally among her three children. Katharine received a 16.4% stake, significantly enhancing her net worth, which was estimated at $5.2 billion as of September 2020.

Cox Enterprises, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, is a privately held conglomerate with over 55,000 employees and annual revenues exceeding $20 billion. The company operates through subsidiaries such as Cox Communications, Cox Automotive, and Cox Media Group. Despite her substantial ownership, Katharine has not taken an active role in the company’s operations.

Beyond her business interests, Katharine is a committed philanthropist. In 2019, she donated over $5 million to the Animal Medical Center in New York City, reflecting her dedication to animal welfare. She also serves on the boards of the New York Public Library and the Morgan Library, contributing to the advancement of these cultural institutions.

Katharine has been married twice. Her first marriage was to Jesse Kornbluth, a magazine writer, on May 26, 1984. They eventually divorced. Her second husband was painter and travel writer William P. “Billy” Rayner, who passed away on January 22, 2018, at the age of 88. Katharine resides in East Hampton, New York, where she is known for her avid gardening and commitment to philanthropy.

Katharine Rayner’s life reflects a blend of business acumen, philanthropic commitment, and personal resilience. Her significant contributions to various causes and her stewardship of a substantial family legacy underscore her influence and dedication to making a positive impact on society.
