Macquarie’s $5B Investment Propels Applied Digital Stock to New Heights Amid AI Infrastructure Expansion

Applied Digital (NASDAQ: APLD) experienced a remarkable surge of 25% in its stock price today following the announcement of a groundbreaking $5 billion investment from Macquarie Asset Management. This significant development marks a pivotal moment for the artificial intelligence infrastructure company, which has been strategically positioning itself in the high-performance computing (HPC) sector.

The investment agreement, structured through Applied Digital’s subsidiary APLDH, involves the issuance of perpetual preferred equity units and common equity units. This substantial capital injection will facilitate the completion of the 400 MW Ellendale HPC Campus and enable the repayment of existing bridge debt, positioning Applied Digital to become one of the fastest-growing HPC data center operators in the United States.

The timing of this deal appears particularly strategic, coming at a crucial juncture when AI model sizes are expanding exponentially, driving unprecedented demand for specialized cooling solutions and power-efficient facilities. Applied Digital’s unique approach to building purpose-built facilities for GPU clusters and AI workloads, rather than retrofitting traditional data centers, has proven to be a significant competitive advantage.

The company’s financial landscape shows both challenges and opportunities. With recent revenue of $189.96 million and a gross profit of $5.78 million, Applied Digital has demonstrated its revenue-generating capabilities despite facing operational costs. The upcoming Q2 2025 earnings report, scheduled for January 14, 2025, is expected to show revenues of $63.40 million with earnings per share of -$0.15.

Anton Moldan, Senior Managing Director of Macquarie Asset Management, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting Applied Digital’s differentiated strategy and access to unique power portfolio across North America. The company’s focus on Tier 3 markets with stranded power assets has proven particularly advantageous given the intense competition for power capacity in traditional data center hubs.
