Maggie Hardy: A Visionary Leader Shaping America’s Building Industry

Maggie Hardy, born on December 7, 1965, in Pennsylvania, stands as a prominent figure in the American business landscape. As the owner and CEO of 84 Lumber, the largest privately held building materials supplier in the United States, and Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, a luxury resort in Pennsylvania, she has significantly influenced the construction and hospitality sectors.

Growing up as the fifth of five children, Hardy developed a close relationship with her father, Joseph A. Hardy III, the founder of 84 Lumber and Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. She attended West Virginia University but left after two years to join the family business in 1987.

In 1992, at the age of 26, Hardy took over the management of 84 Lumber. Under her leadership, the company achieved $1 billion in sales the following year. Today, 84 Lumber operates nearly 310 facilities across 35 states, generating approximately $8 billion in revenue.

Hardy’s strategic vision has driven 84 Lumber’s expansion into new markets. In 2024, the company announced plans to increase its presence in California, aiming to open eight locations, with two additional facilities in the permitting process for La Mirada and Lancaster.

Beyond construction, Hardy has made significant contributions to the hospitality industry through Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. Located in rural Pennsylvania, the resort offers luxury accommodations and amenities, partially modeled after the Ritz in Paris. The resort also houses Hardy’s extensive art collection, which gained public attention when featured in a season of “The Bachelor.”

In 1992, Hardy married Peter J. Magerko, a former member of the Marine Corps and the Pennsylvania State Police. They have one son together. In September 2017, she filed for divorce. On March 30, 2019, she married Shawn Knox in Aspen, Colorado. They currently reside in Pittsburgh.

In January 2025, Hardy filed for divorce in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.

Hardy is known for her philanthropic efforts and has been recognized for her leadership in the construction industry. In 2020, she received the Career Achievement Award from the Pittsburgh Business Times during the Women of Influence event.

Maggie Hardy’s journey from a family business member to a leading entrepreneur exemplifies her dedication and vision. Her leadership continues to shape the building materials and hospitality industries, leaving a lasting impact on the American business landscape.
