Pat Stryker: A Legacy of Philanthropy, Business Acumen, and Political Influence

Patricia A. Stryker, born on April 6, 1956, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, is a distinguished American businesswoman, philanthropist, and political activist. As the granddaughter of Dr. Homer Stryker, the innovative orthopedic surgeon who founded Stryker Corporation—a leading global medical technology company—Pat Stryker inherited a significant portion of the family shares, establishing her as a prominent figure in the business world. As of January 2025, her net worth is estimated at $4.14 billion.

In 2001, Stryker founded the Bohemian Foundation, a philanthropic organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life through music, arts, and community initiatives, primarily in Larimer County, Colorado. The foundation supports various programs, including the “Pharos Fund,” “Give 10,” “Thursday Night Live” summer concert series, and the “Pianos About Town” program, enriching the cultural fabric of the community.

Stryker’s commitment to education is evident through her substantial contributions to Colorado State University (CSU). In 2004, she donated $20 million to CSU, primarily benefiting its football program. This generous contribution underscores her dedication to fostering community development and supporting local institutions.

In the political arena, Stryker is recognized for her significant contributions to Democratic candidates and progressive causes. She has donated to various political action committees and super PACs, including Priorities USA Action, American Bridge 21st Century, Correct the Record, and Women Vote! Within Colorado, Stryker is known as one of the “Four Horsemen,” alongside Jared Polis, Tim Gill, and Rutt Bridges. This group is noted for their substantial contributions to liberal causes and efforts to promote progressive initiatives within the state, playing a pivotal role in shifting Colorado’s political landscape toward a Democratic majority.

Beyond her philanthropic and political endeavors, Stryker has engaged in various business ventures. In 1999, she acquired Sonoma’s Sommer Vineyards in California, revitalizing and renaming it Stryker Sonoma. The winery, covering 32 acres in Alexander Valley, became known for producing classic Bordeaux and Zinfandel varieties. In May 2016, she sold the winery to concentrate more on her foundation work.

Stryker’s contributions have not gone unnoticed. In 2015, the Rotary Club of Fort Collins honored her with the Service Above Self Award, recognizing her significant contributions to the betterment of life in the Fort Collins community.

As of January 2025, Pat Stryker continues to reside in Fort Collins, Colorado. Her ongoing commitment to philanthropy, community development, and political activism underscores her dedication to creating positive change. Through the Bohemian Foundation, she remains a pivotal figure in supporting music, arts, and civic programs, enriching the cultural landscape of her community.
