In a significant milestone for the electric vehicle industry, Tesla has overtaken Audi in global car sales for the first time in history. The American EV manufacturer delivered 1.79 million vehicles in 2024, while Volkswagen AG’s Audi saw its sales decline by 12% to 1.67 million units.
The achievement marks a pivotal moment in the automotive industry’s transition toward electrification, though Tesla’s victory comes amid its own challenges. The company experienced its first annual deliveries decline in over a decade and barely maintained its position as the world’s top seller of fully electric cars ahead of China’s BYD.
Audi’s struggle stems from multiple factors, including intensifying competition in key markets and weakening demand for its electric models. The German luxury brand saw sales decline across major markets, including Germany, China, and North America. Particularly concerning was the 8% drop in fully electric vehicle deliveries to approximately 164,000 units.
The German automotive sector faces broader challenges, especially in China, where market recovery remains uncertain and local manufacturers are increasingly moving upmarket. European sales have also fallen short of expectations following the reduction of EV subsidies in several countries. These headwinds led to profit warnings from major German automakers, including Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW.
In response to declining sales, manufacturers have begun adjusting their production capacity. Audi announced plans to close its Brussels facility due to poor demand for the electric Q8 e-tron SUV. Similarly, Volkswagen is reducing capacity at its namesake brand.
The global EV market continues to evolve rapidly, with China leading the charge. In a remarkable development, EVs accounted for 50% of new car sales in China by mid-2023. Tesla’s Model Y and Model 3 remain the best-selling electric vehicles globally, though the company’s market dominance is gradually eroding as traditional automakers expand their electric offerings.
This historic shift in sales rankings reflects the changing dynamics of the global automotive industry, where electric vehicle manufacturers are increasingly challenging the dominance of traditional luxury brands.
