Memphis residents are on high alert as the city prepares for significant winter weather, with Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) activating its advanced outage tracking system to monitor potential power disruptions. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch starting Thursday evening, with snowfall predictions reaching up to 6 inches in some areas.
MLGW’s real-time outage map, which updates every 15 minutes, has become an essential tool for residents to stay informed about power disruptions across Shelby County. The interactive system allows customers to pinpoint outage locations, track restoration progress, and receive estimated recovery times, making it an invaluable resource during severe weather events.
As of January 10, 2025, MLGW’s territory is experiencing varying levels of outage activity, with affected customers ranging from 1 to 1000 across different areas. The utility company has implemented a comprehensive winter preparation strategy, including infrastructure winterization efforts to prevent service disruptions similar to those experienced during previous extreme weather events.
The City of Memphis is taking proactive measures to address the incoming winter storm. The Division of Public Works has deployed its fleet of 15 snow and ice removal trucks and six brine trucks, with crews beginning pre-treatment of roads with brine on Thursday, January 9. This year’s response includes a new snow and ice mitigation strategy, focusing on treating one lane in each direction on priority routes to ensure critical roadways remain passable.
In anticipation of potential emergencies, MLGW has established a 24/7 outage hotline at (901) 544-6500 for residents to report power disruptions. The utility provider has also enhanced its communication channels, ensuring customers can access outage information through multiple platforms, including their website and social media accounts.
The outage map system has been designed with user security in mind. While it provides general information about outage levels across Shelby County, specific address details are withheld for home safety and security measures. Customers are encouraged to keep their contact information updated with MLGW to receive automated notifications about planned outages and restoration updates.
To support vulnerable residents during this weather event, the City of Memphis has partnered with the Hospitality Hub to open two warming centers. The facilities will operate 24 hours a day, with separate locations for different demographics: single women and families at the Hospitality Hub on Washington Avenue, and single men and couples at First Baptist Church on East Parkway North.
MLGW officials emphasize the importance of preparation and patience during winter weather events. The utility company’s enhanced tracking system, combined with their strategic response plan, demonstrates their commitment to maintaining essential services while keeping the public informed during challenging weather conditions.
