His father, Michel Besnier, was the one who took over a small family business and turned it into Lactalis, a dairy company that would become a household name in France and beyond. Emmanuel studied at the ISG Business School in Paris, preparing him to one day take over the family company. He joined Lactalis in the early 1990s and quickly climbed through the ranks, showcasing a blend of strategic vision and quiet determination.

In 2000, after the death of his father, Emmanuel Besnier assumed the role of CEO at just 30 years old. Unlike his father, who was somewhat more public in his management style, Emmanuel preferred to operate behind the scenes. He rarely gives interviews and is seldom seen in public, earning him the nickname “The Invisible Billionaire” in French media. His discretion, however, should not be mistaken for disinterest. Under his leadership, Lactalis expanded aggressively both within France and internationally, acquiring major brands and integrating them into the Lactalis family.

Some of the company’s most significant acquisitions under Emmanuel’s leadership include Parmalat, the Italian dairy giant, and Stonyfield Farm, a well-known organic yogurt producer in the United States. These acquisitions were strategic and showed Besnier’s intention to diversify Lactalis’s portfolio and reach new markets. As of now, Lactalis operates in over 100 countries, with products ranging from milk and butter to specialty cheeses and yogurts. Brands under its umbrella include Président, Galbani, and Bridel, among many others.

The incident was a major test of his leadership, and although it did bruise the company’s image, Lactalis managed to recover, due in part to its diversified brand strength and global presence.

Besnier’s commitment to keeping the company privately held is another key element of his strategy. Unlike many major global corporations, Lactalis is not publicly traded. This allows the Besnier family to maintain tight control over its operations and financial decisions without answering to shareholders. It also means that much of the company’s internal workings remain a mystery, as private firms are not obligated to disclose as much information as their public counterparts. Emmanuel Besnier, along with his siblings, owns 100% of the company, making them among the richest families in France.

Philanthropy is another area where Emmanuel Besnier keeps a low profile. Though not much is publicly known about his charitable activities, it has been reported that he has made substantial donations to local hospitals and schools in the Mayenne region, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. This reflects his sense of responsibility toward his hometown and his belief in supporting communities quietly rather than with fanfare.

In business circles, Besnier is often described as a strategic thinker, one who prefers long-term growth over short-term gains. His ability to grow Lactalis into a global powerhouse while maintaining a cloak of privacy is a testament to his focused vision.
