Dems: Rename Miami Prison After Trump in GOP Rebuke

Trump Holds Campaign Rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan

House Democrats have proposed renaming a federal prison in Miami after former President Donald Trump. This proposal comes in response to a recent suggestion by House Republicans to rename Washington Dulles International Airport after Trump. The resolution to designate the Miami Federal Correctional Institution as the “Donald J. Trump Federal Correctional Institution” was introduced by Representatives Gerry Connolly of Virginia, Jared Moskowitz of Florida, and John Garamendi of California.

The Democrats’ proposal is seen as a tongue-in-cheek response to the Republican proposal, with Connolly stating that the federal prison would be a more fitting option than the airport, citing Trump’s various civil and criminal court cases. Moskowitz also commented on Trump’s penchant for branding his properties with his name, saying that “everyone knows President Trump loves to write his name in gold letters on all his buildings.”

The Republican proposal to rename Washington Dulles International Airport after Trump was filed by Representatives Michael Waltz of Florida, Andy Ogles of Tennessee, Chuck Fleischmann of Tennessee, Paul Gosar of Arizona, Barry Moore of Alabama, and Troy Nehls of Texas. Both proposals have been referred to committee, but neither is expected to pass in the divided Congress.

The Miami Federal Correctional Institution is located near Trump’s Mar-A-Lago resort and falls under the jurisdiction of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida. This office had indicted Trump on 40 felonies last year for his alleged mishandling of classified documents after leaving office.

In a related development, it was noted that former President Trump could potentially face a maximum total of 717.5 years in prison if found guilty in all four of his criminal cases, including 450 years in his classified documents case. However, legal experts believe that if convicted, he would likely receive a far shorter sentence, as judges typically sentence individuals to much less than the maximum.

The logistics of jailing an ex-president under Secret Service protection are also expected to be challenging. Despite the severity of the charges and the potential consequences, it is important to note that Trump has not been convicted of any crimes related to these cases at this time.

The proposal to rename the airport after Trump has been met with criticism from Democrats, with some pointing out the controversial executive order Trump issued that led to the detention of travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries at the airport. Representative Don Beyer of Virginia was among those who rebuked the proposal, highlighting the negative impact of Trump’s policies.

It has been reported that Trump expressed interest in having an airport named after him in 2020, and he has publicly discussed the possibility of having his face engraved into Mount Rushmore. However, these proposals and discussions remain speculative and have not led to any concrete actions at this time.

In conclusion, the proposal to rename a federal prison in Miami after Donald Trump is part of a political back-and-forth between House Democrats and Republicans regarding the naming of public facilities after the former president. Both proposals are unlikely to pass in Congress, but they reflect the ongoing political tensions surrounding Trump and his legacy.
