A startup in Boston is poised to revolutionize smartphone technology with its metasurfaces camera technology, potentially eliminating the iPhone’s notorious notch and bringing secure Face ID to lower-end Android phones. Metalenz, the company behind this innovation, has developed a cost-effective solution that could reshape the landscape of mobile security and medical imaging.

The current Face ID technology in iPhones utilizes a complex system of components, including a front-facing camera, light, and illuminator, to project invisible dots on a user’s face for 3D verification. This technology, while highly secure, is expensive to manufacture, costing between $10-15 per unit. As a result, Android phones have struggled to replicate this level of security due to cost constraints, resorting to simpler 2D facial recognition systems that are more susceptible to spoofing.

Metalenz’s breakthrough lies in its ability to print camera lenses like computer chips, enabling the production of thousands at a time on a wafer. This innovation, dubbed Polar ID, captures light’s polarization, a key characteristic that differs when light interacts with human skin versus a 3D mask. By leveraging metasurfaces to read and retain this polarization information, Metalenz can create high-fidelity and high-security facial recognition systems at a fraction of the cost of Apple’s Face ID hardware.

This technology not only has the potential to eliminate the notch on smartphones but also opens up a myriad of possibilities in medical imaging and environmental monitoring. By analyzing the polarization of light, smartphones equipped with Metalenz’s technology could detect skin cancer, monitor air quality, and potentially identify other chemical compositions in the environment.

Moreover, Metalenz’s partnership with ST Microelectronics, a major supplier to the electronics industry, could pave the way for widespread adoption of this technology. With ST Microelectronics already providing components for hundreds of smartphone models, including those from Apple, Metalenz’s innovation could soon find its way into billions of devices worldwide.
