Steve Bannon’s Court Appearance Amid Contempt Charges

Steve Bannon Attends Court Hearing For Contempt Of Congress Convictions

House Speaker Mike Johnson announced that House Republicans will file an amicus brief in support of Steve Bannon’s emergency appeal to the Supreme Court. Bannon, a former Trump advisor, faces potential imprisonment for contempt of Congress after defying a subpoena from the January 6 committee. Johnson criticized the committee’s legitimacy under Speaker Pelosi, arguing it was improperly constituted. He emphasized that the current stance of the Republican-led House should carry weight in the court’s decision-making process. Johnson’s statements suggest that the House’s brief aims to bolster Bannon’s appeal by challenging the committee’s authority.

In interviews with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins and Fox News’s Sean Hannity, Johnson elaborated on his views, alleging that the January 6 committee’s actions were tainted and potentially involved covering up evidence of misconduct. He expressed confidence that the House’s supportive brief would aid Bannon in his legal battle. Bannon, in response, commended Johnson and House leadership for their support, applauding their courage in denouncing what he described as an illegally constituted committee and its investigative practices.

Bannon filed an emergency appeal with the Supreme Court following unsuccessful legal efforts to halt his impending prison sentence. In October 2022, Bannon was sentenced to four months in prison and fined $6,500 for contempt of Congress after failing to comply with the committee’s subpoena. Despite Bannon’s appeals, a federal appeals court recently upheld his conviction, emphasizing his refusal to cooperate with the subpoena’s demands. Last week, the D.C. Circuit Court declined to postpone Bannon’s sentence. His legal team argues that Bannon poses no flight risk or danger to others, seeking his release pending further legal proceedings.
