Hayes Barnard: A Visionary Leader in Clean Energy and Philanthropy

Hayes Barnard, an American entrepreneur and philanthropist, has significantly influenced the clean energy sector through his leadership roles in GoodLeap and GivePower. Born and raised in Creve Coeur, Missouri, Barnard was the son of a single mother. He pursued higher education at the University of Missouri, earning a degree in management and marketing. Initially, he attended Central Missouri State on a football scholarship but transferred to the University of Missouri after an injury.

In 1995, Barnard moved to San Francisco to immerse himself in the burgeoning tech industry. He began his career by managing trade show booths and later joined Oracle as a sales executive. In September 2003, he founded Paramount Equity Mortgage, which later rebranded as Loanpal and subsequently GoodLeap. This company was among the pioneers in offering online residential home loans. In 2008, Barnard expanded his ventures by founding Paramount Solar, a subsidiary of Paramount Equity Mortgage, and assumed the role of CEO.

In 2011, Barnard partnered with Guthy-Renker, a direct marketing company, to accelerate the growth of Paramount Equity Mortgage and Paramount Solar. This collaboration also led to a partnership with SolarCity. By 2013, Paramount Solar was acquired by SolarCity for $120 million, and Barnard became SolarCity’s Chief Revenue Officer. During his tenure, he managed a team of 8,000 and was instrumental in increasing the company’s installed megawatts by 300% from 2013 to 2015.

In 2014, while still at SolarCity, Barnard founded GivePower, a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing clean water and energy systems in underserved communities worldwide. The organization has implemented projects in 17 countries, including regions in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Notably, in 2018, GivePower constructed a solar-powered desalination system in Kiunga, Kenya, capable of producing 19,800 gallons of fresh drinking water daily. Additionally, the organization assisted the Sioux Nation in North Dakota in establishing a 300-kilowatt solar farm, marking the state’s first solar farm.

In 2016, Barnard departed from SolarCity to become the chairman and CEO of Loanpal, a financial technology platform that provides financing for clean energy products. By 2020, he launched an asset management fund named GoodFinch. In 2021, Loanpal rebranded as GoodLeap, emphasizing its commitment to sustainability with the tagline “good for life, earth, and prosperity”.

As of October 2022, Barnard’s net worth was estimated at $4 billion, earning him a spot on the Forbes 400 list at position 271. Forbes also awarded him a self-made score of 10 out of 10, a distinction shared by only 28 individuals on the list. In May 2023, Barnard delivered the keynote address at the 140th commencement of the University of Texas at Austin.

Beyond his professional achievements, Barnard resides in Austin, Texas, with his wife and three children. His dedication to clean energy and philanthropy continues to inspire many, reflecting his unwavering commitment to making a positive impact on the world.

In summary, Hayes Barnard’s journey from a young man in Missouri to a leading figure in the clean energy sector and philanthropy underscores his entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to societal betterment. Through his leadership in GoodLeap and GivePower, he has not only advanced sustainable energy solutions but also improved the lives of countless individuals in underserved communities. His story serves as a testament to the profound impact that visionary leadership and a commitment to positive change can have on the world.
