Marathon Season 2 and Free Week Face Crucial Player Test

Bungie’s extraction shooter Marathon is entering a pivotal period as Season 2 launches on June 2, accompanied by the game’s first-ever free week. The update arrives at a time when Bungie is seeking to broaden the game’s audience beyond its dedicated core player base, making the coming days a significant measure of the title’s long-term prospects.

The Season 2 release alone would have provided a key indicator of player retention and returning interest following the game’s initial launch. However, Bungie has added another major variable by opening the game to all players for a full week. Unlike a limited free weekend, the promotion allows users to experience the title from June 2 through the following week, with all progress carrying over if they later purchase the $40 game. The move is expected to generate a substantial influx of new players and provide a clearer picture of broader market interest.

The timing is especially notable because it follows Bungie’s announcement that development on Destiny 2 will end after an update scheduled for June 9. The decision has sparked criticism from some players who view Marathon as the project that received future development resources instead of Destiny 2. At the same time, the upcoming Destiny 2 update has generated considerable excitement, creating the possibility that existing Bungie fans could shift their attention back to the studio’s long-running franchise.

Season 2 introduces several additions aimed at refreshing the experience. Players will gain access to a new defensive Runner known as Sentinel, expanded combat opportunities on the Night Marsh map variant, and new Runner zombie enemies designed to challenge teams during matches. While the content has drawn interest, Bungie’s primary challenge remains attracting enough players to engage with it.

The free week represents the most comprehensive trial of Marathon to date. Unlike the previous server slam test, players will have unrestricted access to all four maps, every available piece of gear, and the complete roster of Runners, including Sentinel. Bungie is effectively offering the full game experience without limitations in an effort to convince players to make a purchase after the trial period ends.

Although the game requires an upfront purchase, Bungie has emphasized that seasonal content itself remains free. The model differs from Destiny and instead follows the approach used by many modern multiplayer titles, where new maps, heroes, and gameplay updates are made available without additional charges.

Player numbers during the launch period are expected to receive close scrutiny. Steam Charts data has become a frequent point of debate among both supporters and critics of Marathon, but the figures remain an important public measure of engagement. According to sources cited in the report, PC players currently outnumber console players by roughly two to one, making Steam activity a significant indicator of the game’s overall health. The same sources suggest Bungie sees limited opportunity for major growth on console platforms compared with PC.

The performance of Season 2 and the free week could have major implications for the game’s future. If the combination fails to surpass the player counts recorded during Marathon’s initial paid launch, it would raise concerns about the title’s ability to expand its audience. Likewise, if concurrent player numbers remain close to the recent baseline of around 10,000 to 11,000 users after the promotion concludes, questions about long-term growth could intensify.

Conversely, a strong increase in player engagement could signal that early skepticism surrounding Marathon is beginning to fade. Sony and Bungie have both indicated that the project will continue receiving support, with Bungie already outlining plans extending through Season 5, approximately a year from now. However, with Destiny 2 winding down and no other confirmed major projects on the horizon, expectations surrounding Marathon have become increasingly significant.

Additional experiments planned for the season include a lighter PvP-focused mode and a new PvE concept scheduled to arrive later. Both features will be closely monitored, particularly as some players have expressed concerns about the game’s competitive intensity. For now, attention remains fixed on the launch of Season 2 and the critical week that follows.
