The University of Georgia

A suspect has been arrested in connection with the tragic death of Laken Hope Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student whose body was found on the University of Georgia’s campus. Riley, a student at Augusta University, was discovered near a lake with visible injuries after failing to return from a run. Authorities initially suspected foul play, and a person of interest was brought in for questioning before an arrest was made.

The cause and manner of Riley’s death are pending examination, but her passing has been officially ruled a homicide. This incident marks the first homicide on the University of Georgia’s grounds in 41 years. Despite the arrest, authorities have assured the public that there is no continuing threat to the campus community.

The University of Georgia and Augusta University have both expressed profound sorrow over Riley’s death. She was described as a junior and Dean’s List student, known for her involvement in the UGA Alpha Chi Omega sorority. Riley transferred to Augusta University in 2023 after starting her studies at UGA.

As the community mourns this loss, the university has urged students to travel in groups and remain vigilant. Authorities have also clarified that Riley’s death is not connected to another recent incident on campus.

Riley’s passing has deeply affected those who knew her. She was well-liked and respected among her peers, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and academic achievement. The circumstances surrounding her death serve as a sobering reminder of the need for safety and awareness on college campuses.
