Putin gifts luxury car to Kim Jong-Un, violating UN sanctions

Putin-Kim Jong-Un

In a move that could spark controversy and international scrutiny, Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly gifted a luxury car to North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un. According to state-run media in Pyongyang, the Korean Central News Agency, Putin presented Kim with a Russian-made car for his “personal use.” The car, reportedly made by Russian luxury carmaker Aurus, is believed to be an Aurus Senat, the same model used as Putin’s presidential limousine.

The gift was acknowledged by Kim Yo Jong, the sister of the North Korean leader, who expressed gratitude to Putin and described the gesture as a “clear demonstration of the special personal relations” between the two leaders. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed the report, stating that the vehicle was indeed a product of Aurus.

This development has raised concerns among South Korean officials, who argue that the gift violates UN sanctions imposed on North Korea. These sanctions, enforced through several resolutions by the UN Security Council, prohibit the transfer or sale of luxury items to North Korea, including vehicles.

A spokesperson for South Korea’s Unification Ministry condemned North Korea for publicly revealing the violation of UN sanctions. The spokesperson also called on Russia, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, to uphold international norms and respect the sanctions regime imposed on North Korea.

The UN Security Council’s resolutions banning the export of luxury goods and vehicles to North Korea have been in place for several years. The first resolution, passed in 2006, banned the supply, sale, or transfer of luxury goods to North Korea, along with weapons. Subsequent resolutions, including one passed in 2017, have reinforced this ban and included restrictions on the transfer of vehicles.

This latest incident is likely to attract attention from the international community, particularly from countries involved in enforcing the UN sanctions regime against North Korea. Russia’s role as a permanent member of the UN Security Council adds to the significance of this development, as it raises questions about the country’s adherence to its international obligations.

In light of these developments, it remains to be seen how Russia and other UN Security Council members will respond to the reported violation of sanctions. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the international community in enforcing sanctions against North Korea and ensuring compliance with UN resolutions.
