Warner Bros. Announces Fifth ‘Matrix’ Movie

The Matrix 1999

Warner Bros. has revealed plans for a fifth installment in the iconic cyberpunk series, ‘The Matrix.’ This announcement comes after the lukewarm reception and underwhelming box office performance of ‘The Matrix Resurrections.’

Directed by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Drew Goddard (‘The Martian’), this upcoming film marks the first time a ‘Matrix’ movie will not be helmed by Lana or Lily Wachowski. Lana Wachowski will, however, serve as an executive producer, promising a fresh perspective while honoring the essence of the original late 90s and early 2000s films.

‘The Matrix Resurrections,’ released in late 2021, brought back Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss as main characters after nearly two decades. Despite this, the film received mixed reviews, with a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Its box office performance was also disappointing, grossing only $157.3 million worldwide against a $190 million budget, partly due to its simultaneous release in theaters and on HBO Max.

While details about the plot and cast of the new ‘Matrix’ movie remain under wraps, the fourth installment left characters like Neo and Trinity alive, hinting at their return.

The franchise’s highest-grossing film remains ‘The Matrix Reloaded,’ which earned $741.8 million in theaters after its 2003 debut. Interestingly, both ‘The Matrix Reloaded’ and ‘The Matrix Revolutions’ were released in 2003, just five months apart.

‘The Matrix Resurrections’ was one of several Warner Bros. films in 2021 to have a simultaneous release in theaters and on streaming platforms, a strategy that received mixed results. ‘Dune,’ for example, grossed $406 million worldwide under this model, but its sequel, ‘Dune: Part Two,’ has surpassed $600 million with an exclusive theatrical run.

The decision on whether the new ‘Matrix’ movie will follow a similar release strategy or opt for an exclusive theatrical debut remains unknown. Critics and audiences have expressed concerns about the franchise’s revival being perceived as a nostalgic cash grab, suggesting that Warner Bros. may take a different approach with the fifth installment.
