England Offers ‘Artificial Pancreas’ to Type 1 Diabetics

England is set to offer “artificial pancreas” devices to tens of thousands of individuals with Type 1 diabetes. These devices, which include an insulin pump, a continuous glucose monitor, and an algorithm, create a “hybrid closed loop” system that automatically regulates blood sugar levels, reducing the need for manual intervention.

Despite the automated function, users will still need to input information about their food intake. These devices, nicknamed “artificial pancreases,” mimic the behavior of the pancreas by automatically releasing insulin to manage blood sugar levels. People with Type 1 diabetes no longer produce insulin due to their immune system attacking the pancreas.

Managing blood sugar levels in Type 1 diabetes requires calculating and administering insulin doses, which can be affected by various factors such as diet, exercise, stress, and temperature. Both high and low blood sugar levels can have severe short- and long-term consequences, including coma and organ damage.

The new devices aim to simplify diabetes management by automating insulin delivery and reducing the risk of hypoglycemia. They were previously piloted by 835 individuals and are now being rolled out to tens of thousands more.

The rollout will prioritize individuals under 18, pregnant women, and those with an HbA1c level of 58 mmol/mol (7.5%) or higher. The initial rollout is supported by a £2.5 million budget from England’s public health system.

Health experts have praised the technology, calling it “groundbreaking” and stating that it has the potential to significantly improve the quality of life for those with Type 1 diabetes. Diabetes UK has described the rollout as a “landmark moment” and is working with the NHS to ensure a fair and efficient distribution of the devices.
