TikTok’s New Photo Sharing Feature Takes Aim at Instagram

TikTok, the popular video-sharing app, is venturing into the realm of photo sharing, a move that could challenge Instagram’s dominance in the space. Reports indicate that TikTok is working on a new feature that will allow users to share photos, similar to how they share videos on the platform. Some users have already encountered notifications indicating that their photo posts will also be shared on a new platform called TikTok Notes.

The Notes platform, which currently has a live website at notes.tiktok.com, appears to be designed for sharing Polaroid-style posts featuring a still photo and caption. This format is reminiscent of Instagram’s early days when it was primarily a platform for sharing photos, before it evolved into a more diverse platform under the ownership of Meta (formerly Facebook).

While TikTok has confirmed its plans to create a “dedicated space” for photos and text, details about the design and release date of the Notes app remain scarce. However, TikTok has been actively encouraging brands to use its photo carousel feature, which allows users to scroll through multiple still photos in a single post. According to reports, posts using this feature receive significantly more comments and shares than video posts, on average.

Karen North, a digital social media expert and professor at the University of Southern California, believes that TikTok’s move into photo sharing does not mean that video content will become less important on the platform. Instead, TikTok is likely aiming to attract users who may be uncomfortable with video or being recorded, thus expanding its user base.

In addition to photo sharing, TikTok is also reportedly exploring other new features, such as support for text posts similar to Twitter and Meta-owned Threads, as well as experimenting with longer video formats akin to YouTube. These developments indicate TikTok’s ambition to become a more versatile platform that caters to a wide range of content creators and users.

The move towards photo sharing comes at a time when Instagram remains highly popular, particularly among young adults. According to a recent Pew Research survey, 78% of Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 use Instagram, making it the most popular social media app in that age group. This underscores the competitive landscape in which TikTok operates, as it seeks to innovate and differentiate itself from its rivals.

Overall, TikTok’s expansion into photo sharing represents a strategic move aimed at enhancing the platform’s appeal and keeping users engaged. By offering a diverse range of content formats, TikTok hopes to solidify its position as a leading social media platform and continue its growth trajectory in the years to come.
