Biden’s Campaign Stays on TikTok Despite Ban Threat

TikTok

President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign plans to continue using TikTok, despite recent legislation that could lead to the app’s ban in the U.S. The bill, signed by Biden, requires the Chinese-owned platform to be sold or face a ban due to safety concerns. The campaign views TikTok as a crucial platform to engage with voters and intends to implement enhanced security measures, though specifics were not disclosed for security reasons.

The decision comes as the Biden-Harris HQ account on TikTok boasts over 306,300 followers, highlighting the platform’s significance in reaching a younger audience. The campaign launched the account in February, despite the app being banned on most federal government devices due to similar security concerns.

The legislation signed by Biden includes provisions for aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, alongside the requirement for TikTok’s sale or ban. Concerns have been raised that ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, could potentially share user data with the Chinese government, a claim consistently denied by TikTok officials.

The push for a TikTok ban has been ongoing, with lawmakers at various levels citing safety concerns and the app’s impact on mental health. Former President Donald Trump previously attempted to ban TikTok in 2020, but his executive order was blocked in court. Trump has since changed his stance on the issue.

TikTok has stated its intent to fight the ban in court, emphasizing its efforts to secure U.S. data and maintain a platform free from external influence. The ongoing legal battle over the ban remains a key development to monitor in the future.
