DNC Pays Biden’s Legal Bills Amid Trump Criticism

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has come under scrutiny for using almost $2 million to cover legal expenses for President Joe Biden during the special counsel investigation into his handling of classified documents. This revelation has sparked controversy, particularly in light of the Biden campaign’s past criticisms of former President Donald Trump’s use of donor funds to pay his legal bills.

According to data from the Federal Election Commission, payments totaling $1.05 million were made to Bob Bauer LLC between July 2023 and February 2024. Additionally, multiple payments of $100,000 were made to the law firm Hemenway & Barnes, starting around July 2023. Both of these legal entities were reportedly part of Biden’s legal team during the special counsel probe, which began in January 2023.

While the exact amount spent specifically on the special counsel investigation is not detailed in the disclosures, sources familiar with the matter have indicated that at least $1.5 million was used for this purpose. Multiple media outlets have confirmed that the payments were indeed used for Biden’s legal defense during the probe.

These payments, while legal, have drawn comparisons to Trump’s use of donor funds for his legal fees. Since the beginning of 2023, Trump’s Save America PAC has reportedly spent approximately $51.3 million on legal costs, a significantly higher amount than what was spent on Biden’s legal defense.

The revelation of the DNC’s payments has raised questions about the Biden campaign’s previous criticisms of Trump’s use of donor funds for legal expenses. Biden campaign spokesman Kevin Munoz emphasized that their small-donor contributions were used for voter outreach, contrasting this with what he described as Trump’s reliance on retirees and working Americans to cover his legal bills.

Recent comments from Biden campaign officials have highlighted Trump’s use of campaign donations to pay legal fees. Campaign finance chairman Rufus Gifford stated that every donation to the Biden-Harris campaign is used for voter outreach, not legal bills. Campaign co-chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg mocked a recent Trump fundraiser, accusing Trump of using the event to raise money for legal costs and political favors.

Republicans have been quick to criticize the Biden campaign for these payments. The RNC research account tweeted about the payments, saying, “Pot, meet kettle.” Karoline Leavitt, a Trump campaign spokesperson, described the revelation as an example of “lies and hypocrisy.”

The special counsel investigation into Biden’s handling of classified documents did not result in criminal charges. However, the report criticized Biden for retaining classified documents and suggested that he could use his age and memory issues as a defense, echoing criticisms from the Trump campaign. In contrast, Trump is facing multiple criminal and civil cases, including a special counsel investigation into his handling of classified documents and a case involving hush money payments to Stormy Daniels.
