Greene’s Call to Oust Speaker Johnson Lacks GOP Support

Taylor Greene

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., has called for Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., to resign following the House’s approval of aid for Ukraine and Israel. However, few of her Republican colleagues, including members of the far-right Freedom Caucus, have joined her. Greene claims support for her motion is growing but has only garnered backing from a handful of far-right Republicans like Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., and Rep. Paul Gosar, R-Ariz.

After the vote, Massie criticized the bill, calling it a “total capitulation” without securing the border. Both Greene and Massie continued their attacks on Johnson, with Greene suggesting Republicans will lose the House in 2025 under his leadership.

Johnson has dismissed Greene’s motion as absurd and has received praise from other Republicans for his work with Democrats on the aid packages. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also thanked the House, including Johnson, for their decision.

The House passed separate foreign aid bills totaling $61 billion for Ukraine, $26 billion for Israel, and $8 billion for Taiwan and other allies. Greene, Massie, and a few others opposed the bills, while most Republicans supported them.

The bills will now go to the Senate before reaching President Biden’s desk. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer plans to hold a vote on the bills next week.

The House Freedom Caucus, which previously ousted former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, has not supported Greene’s effort against Johnson. Greene, a former member of the caucus, did not vote to remove McCarthy, who eventually resigned from Congress in December.
