Oregon Ticket Wins $1.3B Powerball, 4th Largest Ever

powerball jackpot lottery

A winning Powerball ticket was drawn in the early hours of Sunday morning, following a three-hour delay. The ticket, purchased in Oregon, secured the jackpot of $1.3 billion, marking it as the fourth-largest prize in the game’s history. The lucky winner now faces a choice: claim the prize as a lump sum of $608 million or receive the full amount in a 30-year annuity, with payments that increase by 5% each year.

However, the actual amount the winner will take home is significantly lower after taxes. The lump sum is automatically taxed at 24%, with an additional 8% state tax in Oregon. This means that after taxes, the winner will receive approximately $413,440,000 if they reside in Oregon. The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are incredibly slim, with odds of 1 in 292.1 million for Sunday’s jackpot, according to the lottery.

The Powerball drawing, typically scheduled for 11 p.m., faced delays as one lottery needed extra time to complete pre-draw procedures. The draw was eventually held at 2:30 a.m. EDT on Sunday. While the winning ticket was confirmed to be sold in Oregon, the identity of the winner remains unknown.

In addition to the jackpot winner, seven other players from different states including Arizona, Delaware, Florida, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, and Wyoming, won prizes of $1 million each during the same drawing on Sunday.

Looking ahead, the Powerball jackpot has been reset to $20 million, with the next drawing scheduled for Monday night at 11 p.m. If no winner is selected, the jackpot will continue to grow. This win marks the second Powerball jackpot claimed in 2023, following a win of $842.4 million in January. Another significant jackpot, over $1 billion, was won in March in the Mega Millions game.
