U.S. to Sanction Iran’s Drone Program After Israel Attack

The United States is set to introduce fresh sanctions against Iran, focusing on its missile and drone program, in response to Iran’s recent attack on Israel. The White House announced that these sanctions would be implemented in the coming days. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated that the sanctions would target Iran’s missile and drone program, as well as entities supporting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Iran’s Defense Ministry.

Sullivan also mentioned that similar sanctions are expected from U.S. allies and partners. Additionally, the White House is collaborating with the Department of Defense and U.S. Central Command to strengthen air and missile defense systems and early warning capabilities across the Middle East.

According to the Associated Press, 99% of the missiles and drones launched by Iran against Israel were intercepted, resulting in only minor damage to an air base. Sullivan affirmed that the White House remains prepared to take further action against the Iranian government.

The news comes amidst escalating tensions between Israel and Iran. The conflict intensified following an attack on the Iranian embassy in Syria earlier this month, which resulted in the deaths of two high-ranking commanders of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps. Iran has accused Israel of orchestrating the strike, although Israel has not claimed responsibility.

Iran’s response to the attack on its embassy was a large-scale strike against Israel, involving the launch of more than 300 drones and missiles. However, most of these were intercepted, with the U.S. reportedly assisting Israel in downing “nearly all” of the incoming drones and missiles.

Despite the heightened tensions, the U.S. has reiterated that it is not seeking war with Iran, even as it continues to support Israel. The National Security Council spokesperson, John Kirby, told NBC News that the U.S. remains committed to diplomatic solutions.

While Israel has indicated its intention to retaliate against Iran for the drone attack, U.S. officials have suggested that any Israeli response is likely to be limited in scope. The situation remains fluid, with uncertainty surrounding the timing and nature of any potential Israeli retaliation.
