NYC Set to Revoke Trump’s Gun License After Felony Conviction

Former President Donald Trump is facing additional legal consequences following his recent conviction on 34 felony charges related to falsifying business records during his hush money trial in New York. The New York Police Department (NYPD) is expected to revoke his gun license, a standard procedure following such convictions.

Trump’s concealed carry license was already suspended in April 2023, shortly after his indictment. CNN reported that two of his three licensed pistols were surrendered to the NYPD on March 31, 2023, while the remaining handgun was lawfully moved to Florida, as indicated on his license.

A senior police official, cited by CNN, stated that the completion of an NYPD legal bureau investigation would likely result in the revocation of Trump’s gun license. However, Trump retains the option to request a hearing to appeal the revocation.

Should Trump retain possession of the handgun in Florida, it could constitute a violation of federal and Florida gun laws prohibiting convicted felons from possessing firearms. Such violations carry potential sentences of up to 10 to 15 years in prison.

Trump’s conviction on 34 felony charges of falsifying business records is unprecedented for a former or sitting president. Each count carries a maximum penalty of up to four years in prison and/or a fine of up to $5,000, amounting to a potential total sentence of up to 136 years in prison and $170,000 in fines. However, legal experts suggest it is unlikely that Trump will serve a lengthy prison term given his status as a first-time offender.

Despite his conviction, Trump, who receives full-time protection from the U.S. Secret Service, is expected to appeal. His sentencing is scheduled for July 11, just three days before the start of the Republican National Convention.
