Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee Has Pancreatic Cancer

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, announced on Sunday night that she has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Despite this serious health challenge, the long-serving congresswoman affirmed her commitment to continuing her legislative duties while undergoing treatment.

Representing Texas’ 18th District, which includes parts of Houston, Jackson Lee has been a member of Congress for nearly three decades. Known for her resilience, she previously battled breast cancer, a diagnosis she disclosed in 2012. She had undergone surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, ultimately making a full recovery. Reflecting on that period, she once said, “Like so many women, I experienced surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and other effects, including loss of hair.”

Jackson Lee’s recent political activities highlight her enduring dedication to public service. She successfully won a primary election as part of her current Congressional reelection campaign. Last year, she ran for the position of Houston Mayor, though she was defeated by fellow Democrat John Whitmire.

Steve Scalise, R-La., the No. 2 House Republican, announced his diagnosis with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer. He has been undergoing treatment and earlier this year, his office reported that he was receiving stem cell treatments, which required him to work remotely until February.
